Instead of belts I use fishing line (Spectra) Have a search and you'll find several posts on the topic.
As far as are my prints being good... I have next to no backlash and zero moire. Most of this has nothing to do with the x-axis motor. It is a little early to tell but the new motor seems just fine. It has basically the same specs as the stock motor so I can't say that it is better and only time will tell if it will last. It seems to be dealing with the extra mass of the Bulldog XL just fine though.
Conclusion: At this early stage I would recommend this motor to those looking to duplicate the results from the stock motor.

I would say that this is a fine replacement for the X-axis motor.
http://www.pololu.com/product/1209/
I haven't even adjusted the VREF and it runs just fine. There are a few notable differences but nothing that keeps it from being a direct replacement.
It is slightly taller and the shaft has a flat on it. I had to use the screws from the SD motor as the ones in it where a little to long and prevented the screws on the shaft side from being able to secure it to the bracket.

The wires were also about 4 inches short so I made up an extension cord.

Hope this helps
