People build 2m wide lasers from the stuff... its stiffer than rods

Footprint wise it's not much bigger than the SD when you consider it's electronics and spool holder. ..

As for speed... not sure why you'd think it's slower... bigger motors with less friction than an SD...

Anyway. . My point was there's no point super sizing an SD because there is nothing special or unique about them that warrants it... much more cost effective and more mechanically sound to just do it properly with a more appropriate materials...

Adrian, my worry with the ordbot style is stiffness and foot print. For it to print 400 long wont the table stick out 300mm each direction?

Also how fast do you think it would be compared to the xy design of the solidoodle? At the size of model i want to print speed will be important?

Cheers

You wont expand a solidoodle without rendering it entirely pointless to have had a solidoodle as a base to start with.

You are far better off upscaling an Ordbot's design or similar, where it simply becomes a matter of using longer Makerslide and Mitsumi extrusion.

There is nothing special about a solidoodle worth fretting over upgrading it to be twice the size....

I know a few people have bantered this about but has anyone done this?

I was thinking of using the x y carriage assembly done by lawsy? I'm sorry if it was done by someone else...

I would like a print area of around 400mm x 300mm or even slightly bigger... Any suggestions? Plus i would like multiple extruders.

Any suggestions of the way forward? I dont know whether to try building it or buy something?
