I have recommended the SD3 to other academic folks. I think it is possible to print right out of the box. There are some issues that upgrades like, enclosures, glass printing surfaces with hairspray or even abs slurry glue, fans for the y driver motor, extruder and electronics,
I have purchased two of the ED3 extruders and plan to mount them together when the software catches up with the hardware for dual head printing.
Good luck what ever you choose, The biggest reason for choosing a SD3 is this group,,,, their the best.

Probably the one thing I'd do different is get the cheaper one without the bed heater, because you'll want to replace the bed heater anyway, so might as well save the money (though I admit, I haven't gotten my replacement heater installed yet).

If you were to get the exact amount you paid for your Solidoodle would you make a different purchase now after having experience with the Solidoodle?

If you'd look into another printer, why and which ones?

Thank you.
