So seriously, nobody has any opinions on the Buccaneer huh seems like nobody has heard of it.

I heard of it. I also heard of Robo3D. Problem is, these kickstarter companies that seem to have better pricing are.... kickstarter companies.

3 months ago, I wanted a Robo3D (I had barely started my learning experience in FFF printers). Problem was, Robo3D was funded, and thier website store was reporting shipping retail units for 4 months. It turned out to be 5 months+. I did not want to wait that long. At the time, Solidoodle had good reviews and their leadtime was less than 2 weeks. The Bucaneer is still 2 months away from being birthed.

Thoughts on the buccaneer: Mechanics in the video look solid. Real linear rails (not shafts), stamped metal assembly parts, motors and assembly sized for the application. Looks very well designed. The software shown looks polished, like the apple version of Repetier. Honestly, it looks too good to be true for less than $300, even though it is PLA only. They reached thier goal spectacularly. They should have the funds to follow out their business plan and ship product. Gotta wait and see though.

So, opinion? I dont have an opinion on something that does not exist. Looks nice. Until it is a reality, there is no point wondering about it. I made my decision 3 months ago. I thought about plopping $300 for one of these anyway, but quite frankly decided to wait for retail on it while I cut my teeth on a bigger unit.

The thing about printers on kickstarter is that they can look great, but once they ship they are garbage. The prototype in the kickstarter campaign barely worked, and production units end up having design failures that do not get solved for all the units shipped to backers. Nowadays, people who got in early to 3d printing know better than to get involved with an unproven KS campaign.

Tomek, No hard feelings at all. I can understand how it looks when someone new to a forum with such a low post count starts spewing off stuff about some new product.
Charles, you read my mind..... I am on a budget. I have had some pay problems at work recently (they overpaid me and are now taking back WAY more than I owe them) and with bills and all..... I won't be able to afford an SD3 probably until Christmas or I might have to wait until income tax time, we will just have to wait and see.
I am wondering if something like the printrbot simple would be a good starting point for me since it is so affordable. It would also allow me the opportunity to gain some 3D printing experience before investing a good $800+ on an SD3. The printing area is half the size and it only prints in PLA but hey. I gotta start somewhere. I can always sell it once I gain some knowledge and then upgrade to the SD3.
Anyways, I am now way off topic..... So seriously, nobody has any opinions on the Buccaneer huh seems like nobody has heard of it.

It used to be $200 as a kit, but now the best you can do is $260 as a kit without the wood panels. Still, if you're on a budget...

Hi Brandon! Sorry if I was a bit too aggressive in saying it sounds spamish. I totally understand the feeling of diving into something and taking a while to start floating/swimming in the sea of info. So yeah! I do that all the time, and I think i misinterpreted it (and this was kind of rude.)

I also see I was wrong about the price -it's listed at $347 on their chart.

I read more carefully and saw a few more things. I find it interesting they did a lot of work on running their printer off a raspberry pi as a print server. Part of me sees this as unfortunate for them, because an open source repetier project has enabled that for any printer, as well. Similar, the open source community lost on whatever work they did on their server system.

I am impressed with their $347 price point. And glad to see that the system is compatible with non-cartridge filament.

helifrek wrote:

Sorry if this came off as spam, not my intentions at all.

This kinda sounds like spam.

From my quick google ,Buccaneer is a >$900 printer, uses "printer cartridges" [reeks of extra cost and limited competition]. and doesn't yet exist besides preorders.

So I suppose those are my thoughts on the buccaneer.

Was doing a search on google for "cheapest 3d printer" and came across the Buccaneer. looks neat, but it has a small build area and at the moment only prints in PLA. Did a search on the forum and couldn't find much on it. IMHO I would rather go with the SD3 because I plan to make larger items for my r/c hobby and for robotics (and the wife wants to make arts and crafts...), but could the buccaneer really bring 3d printing to the masses? Drive prices down and competition up? I really wish I had money to invest because I think household 3D printing is going to be the next big thing I will say that I like the simple 3D modeling program they are using in their videos. I am still split between using sketchup which seems fairly easy to learn or trying to find a relatively easy solid modeler.
