Rigidbot come in a pre-built option.
I KS'd a rigidbot big because it's the first 3d printer to hit the build volume I needed for a specific task (within my budget). If you don't need that then go with the SD3 as it has gone through a couple revisions and is available now.
As for print quality comparison, no one can tell yet because no one has a Rigid bot yet. I don't think they've stated the print head to be used either.

It's pre-built, not a kit.
It's got a 200x200x200mm build area
It's got an excellent support community here
It's great value
It's really easy to mod for a few little improvements that cost next to nothing
Parts are common and easy to source as it's based on open source RepRap designs
It can be on your doorstep a LOT quicker than most other printers out there
It works out of the box, dont worry about the Hacks & Mods section here, thats a bonus. I got mine and was printing cool stuff within an hour.

Also, once you have a printer, us Australian's on teh board scan point you to good sources for ABS etc. Dont be afraid to ask.

Hi guys,
I'm a 3D modeller but I've never had anything to do with 3D printing.
I'd love to get involved but only as a hobbyist.

If my budget is around $1000 (give or take) and I just want to make small things like the size of a softball (maybe a bit more height would be nice) is the RigidBot going to be a good choice for me?

Delivery to Australia wouldn't be until December (probably later than that anyway) so I'm kinda sad about that.

I would like an option where the material is cheap and easy to get so I can perform lots of test prints and not worry too much.
A nice smooth and strong product is desirable but I understand you get what you pay for.
What do you guys think? Offer any good alternatives, I'd love to hear about all the best printers you have experience with or have heard about.

Carl
