If we had been satisfied with every part created, we would have gone open source right now I think. But I don't think any of the parts meet any "share-online-quality-standard":P

We're gonna write a blog post showing the technical solutions, so it should be possible to construct such a machine after that.. Though it will be necessary to construct some parts.

The dream is to make an open source project with several contributors! How is the best way to start that? Git-hub-project?

I would like to know what laser and what controller was used to run the machine.  Looks neat.

We ported GRBL to run on an AVR ATmega128. It's not optimal when it comes to high movement speeds and computational power, but it works okey:)

The laser is at the moment a 2W 445nm, but we run it at only 0.5W, because of the temporarily drivers low current possibility:/ But that will soon change, making it possible to engrave much faster and maybe(?) cut through some types of material.

Cutting through kapton for making soldering stencils would have been awesome!

Yeah, that would be easier smile But the work area would not be that big, nor the flexibility for engraving on different sized materials:P

Actually, adding a laser to a CNC machine are common! One of the main reason we did this was to get som hands on with making linear motion mechanics:) (And of course; a CNC machine is more expensive..)

We used the SD3 to make parts for a laser engraver smile

Making something that "mechanic" was a great way to learn the SD3 and how to use a more complex CAD software (Inventor in this case).

The attached image is the first revision of the main slider. We did not take so many pictures of the newest design, because we tried to document as much as possible by film:P
