I prefer printing in PLA since I've had NOTHING but problems with ABS. Granted, I've only tried SD ABS, but my .1mm prints never turn out solid with a peculiar texture. My .3mm prints are always a wirey mess and nearly impossible to finish. I never had to finish my PLA prints, so that's why I stopped using SD until they carry PLA (ever?).
I've read several articles that, as far as filament goes, you unfotrunately get what you pay for. In said articles, it was stated that there really is no industry standard for the constituants that make up the filaments. So you will have inconsistancies.
As an example: I recently bought a trans green PLA from JustPLA on Amazon. Beautiful solid and glossy prints. A week later I bought a purple spool (also PLA) from Makerbot. It lays down far smoother than the JustPLA, far better adhesion, and it's worth the extra few bucks.

I've been reading posts all over Soliforum for about a year, and just started posting very recently. And I must say this is what I've noticed: If it works for you, just keep doing it. It may play chaos on someone else. And if you have found a filament that lays clean and hasn't clogged, stick with it.

Honestly, I haven't seen Solidoodle's as that great -- two out of three of the spools I got from them have become nigh-unusable. I'll admit some of that might be that they're older and spent more time out in the open air, but the extra time they spent was all in Vermont winter, which is not known for its humidity (quite the opposite). Some SainSmart and Octave that sat out almost as long has had not the slightest hint of problems.

In any case, the two sources I've had good results with are SainSmart and Octave. I've had slightly more problems with "adhesion" with Octave, but I've had to do a lot more manual management of the spools of SainSmart to deal with twists and kinks, especially near the starts of spools. SainSmart is usually a little cheaper on Amazon, but not by a huge amount.

I think more people are going to weigh in in favor of Octave here, they're widely liked. Fewer people have tried SainSmart yet.
