Looks nice. Most of us that already have the printer already have made covers. Perhaps you should see if SD is interested in repping the covers for a 30% cut of the price? Your market will be people that are just buying the printer.

Thanks guys for the input. And, yeah... figured many people would just build there own considering that while operating a solidoodle is not rocket science it still seems to be more for a hobbyist or professional. But could be wrong on that. I love mine, but I often think the calibration, and other nuances of operation would be quite the hurdle for those who just want to click print.

That being said... as you have pointed out; looking to pick up those to lazy, or to busy to build there own. Right now I am leaning towards a price point of $30 - $35 + SH & Handling.

The magnetically attached casing is quite dreamy to work with because it's such a great compromise between having it look pretty, stay insulated, and yet still be able to have fast access for the inevitable fiddling.

Thanks again guys. Also if anyone has a solidoodle 2 and is willing to take precise measurements of the machine, and different external components I'll gladly send them the first case prototype for free, even put a custom engraved logo on it or some other design:) please chime in.

Anyhow. I will go ahead and get it listed on my product catalog, and open up for orders. I'll post when it's up.

p.s. If you're interested in seeing my original case that is pretty similair here it is. Of course being my personal case I went to town with engraving a company specific design all over it. It works well for the most part, except it's a little short, and has caused filament jamming issues a time or two, hence the redesign. I will upgrade it soon.... but you know how things like that can go when it comes to your own stuff.

I like it a lot, ad at a good price point I can see it being attractive to purchase.

However, as a maker, I'm probably more likley to make my own just because I can. Good inspiration though, certainly the design to beat!

Love the poll. Unfortunately, I think you will find that:
 a) Most of us in the Soliforum are cheap bastards (lol)
 b) Being folks who are willing to suffer through the pains of making plastic pieces, most of us have designed our own cases.

That being said, your case is one of the cleanest designs I have seen and as the printers become more popular, your case could be high in demand.

Keep up the great work!

I like the idea of the plexi glass bezel. I subconsciously without thinking just lift open the top panel to be able to look straight down on it since it just rests on top. But would be much more convenient to just see it through the 45 deg bezel.

Yeah I figured solidoodle didn't give the case as an option on the solidoodle 3 because it seemed like something that needed to be redesigned considering how often you want to get at the components to tweak, calibrate, and maintain them; and pulling it off seemed painfully obnoxious.

One of the reasons my case had to be panels instead of a single piece. I didn't want to mess around with a giant box every time I needed axis.

Thanks for the input!

I would recommend adding plexiglass to the bezel, and maybe making the front window extend into the bezel. The thing I didn't like about the metal case from Solidoodle is I always had to bend over to look inside, and I couldn't look down at the first layers.

Update!

All right, so it's up and ready for purchase. Still would love input. But now you can not only take the poll, but actually get one for real:) If you have any questions let'em loose at me.

Product Page
pastprimitive.com/index.php?route=produ … duct_id=81

Original:
Attached below is the second case I designed after I made one for my solidoodle 3. I actually sent this one as a present to Solidoodle after some great customer service.

All the panels are individually magnetically attached. (super easy removal for maintenance etc..)

Protects from cold drafts

Increased insulation for prints to help reduce large parts warping.

Case taller than SD3 to allow a nice big slot on back for unhindered filament movement. (thought this would reduce insulating effectiveness but seems to work great for my purposes.)

45 deg. front bezel, great opportunity for a custom logo;)

Made from a nice fiberboard material with water proof factory coating on one side.(Allows me to engrave great looking detailed custom logos / text with my CNC router.)

I am thinking about offering these for sale through my online retail store. But I was curious what you all thought of the design, and if the price point was attractive?

All your critiques are welcome. It sure dresses up the solidoodle nicely, and while the fiberboard and Plexiglass slightly warp when the printer has been on for a while, it all returns back to normal once it's all cooled down.

Anyhow I sure have enjoyed showing off my SD3 much more with this case on it, and people are much more attracted to the machine, and less scared by it's industrial feel.

Anyhow if anyone is interested in purchasing them, let me know and I will add them to my product catalog on my online store.

There's a poll below if you want to be anonymous about your reaction;)

p.s. May be an opportunity for a SD2 owner to get a free one if they are willing to assist in providing precise dimensions of there Solidoodle 2. Let me know if anyone would begin to be interested.
