I would recommend going through training videos found all over the net for Blender3d.  You can start but printing out a list of the shortcut keys for Blender3d and that in itself will tell you how useful it is.  There are many.

will check out the software and see where it leads me then maybe look into buying a 3d printer smile

Also check out tinkercad.  Very simplistic, but you can get some of your basic stuff done with it pretty fast.

Try google sketchup(it's free), you will have to learn a little bit how to use it(as every software of course) but you will be soon ready to create what you want.

To scan 3d object is a little bit expensive, the less expensive I Know for small object is:
