Personally, I think a 3D model is useful. From it a 2D view that is annotated with part numbers and sources can easily be created. But to the extent that someone is mocking up an add-on, the 2D part might not be as helpful as a SketchUp model into which that part can be imported to see how it would fit, align, etc.

So I'd go with the 3D approach with it's higher potential future utility, given that it would be a superset of what's currently wanted.

(Maybe not very articulately said, but you get the idea I bet ...)

Matt

That looks very nice, but does it suite our purpose? It took me 1 hour to make the Z-platform, and I'm working on the extruder/print-carriage now.

My thoughts on what we need an exploded view for:
- establish common terms for each part of the printer, including part numbers, even for the small parts.
- create catalogue of sources for each part
- create a quick visual aid of how the printer can be assembled and disassembled.
- create a comparison of the major mods (layers).

I know it's nice to have a 3D view for this, but a 2D exploded view should be plenty, especially given the axis-aligned nature of various components. edit: Additionally, the exploded view is more for people who already own an SD, so they already have a 3D view of it IRL

On the other hand, It doesn't matter much if we mix formats, since we will probably have a different image for each major component anyway. I will refine some things and then add them to the wiki.

Once again, how about part numbers? Just 001 002 003 arbitrarily? e.g. SD2 aluminum bed Part #001

This needs to be moved to Solidoodle discussion or 3d modeling and design. I was planning on doing this anyhow to help with making mods.

I started working on getting the model together. Here is what I have so far, Everything is accurate so far I think. I will try to sketch out the bed and nut assembly tomorrow.

I am going to have a user_mods and originals layer. when viewing the user_mods, things like lawsy MK4, the M5 upgrade , idle brackets, fan mod and so on will show. Original layer will show just that.

Could use some help with the models. If anyone has the bed already modeled some where let me know. I can use just about any program to bring it into sketchup.

I think i saw that lawsy was working on the original x-carriage. Let me know if you need help or I will jump on the Y carriage originals.
