That is why I understood that the reading lens may work better.

nop.. i try to scan with the zoom lens with Kinect 360 and even after a calibration , the result is awful... it seems that reconstructme doesn't like the "fish eye" effect of the zoom lens.. ( it's a Nyko zoom ) so for the moment, you need object of a shoe box size for good result ... perhaps i do something the wrong way..

When you are 30 cm away, the object should be about 20cm high. So small objects could be scanned with the kinect for windows... or with david laser scanner... or with this attachment: http://www.amazon.com/Zoom-Kinect-Xbox- … B0050SYS5A (but i never tried the last one).

I've definitely seen very nice scans of people and larger objects with great definition. However, I would like to try to scan other smaller objects very accurately. As I said, everything I've done with this has worked much easier and nicer than other programs I've used. But I would like to try small objects and to move them much closer to the kinect. One mod I read about included creating a dark box with led lights around the top perimeter and placing the small object on something like a black lazy Susan and rotating it from underneath. To allow the kinect to be placed very close to the object and focus properly, a reading lense was fixed in front if the camera. I won't be back into town to try this till Friday. I do think that for $40 for the kinect, the quality I am seeing so far is matching that of very expensive setups.

I learned about ReconstructMe at the Pittsburgh Mini Maker Faire this weekend and had to try it out! It took about one full night to download all the right drivers and software, but it wasn't very tough and worked on the first try. This is so much less clunky and more accurate than 123d catch that there seems to really be some potential here. I was wondering if anyone else has messed around with improving the resolution and or using hacks such as putting a reading lense in front of the kinect camera.

For those who don't know, it is a program that utilizes a kinect to take a 3d scan and is done in one continuous rotation of the object instead of taking 40 or 50 pictures.

http://reconstructme.net/

First attempt picture is attached. It was with regular resolution scan, repositioned and scaled with replicator G, trimmed with Blender, replaced with rep G, sliced in Slic3r at .1 mm height, and printed in pronterface. It took about 2 hours with no infill and 5 perimeters.
