Whenever I decide to look for a second printer, the enclosure issue is something that gives me pause about the mendel variants. PLA is the preferred material among RepRaps, and I think the lack of enclosure is a big reason for that. During the winter it can be under 50F in the garage when I start prints, and I don't think I would be able to run ABS without the ability to close the printer and warm the interior. Anything with a nozzle that moves in XY can be put in a box shaped frame and then closed up, but it's harder with the printers that move the bed in Y.

There are getting to be more materials available to work with, some of which are even more prone to warping. If you want to work with those it will be necessary to address the problem rather than limit yourself to PLA or small prints in other plastics.

So I am thinking the mendel max should be

much faster like 200mm/s
reliable with better alignment and less friction (less/no skipped steps?)
bigger build area
not as heat sensitive? it seems none online have any enclosures? why is that vs the SD2

For cost and performance it seems the mendel is the best? I looked at rostock but still seems could be buggy and the Y carriage with 3 motors could be tension nightmare.

Anyone else chime in on otehr units that might be easy or better to build/buy for an upgrade to the SD2
robust,reliable,faster,bigger then the SD design?

Also I am thinking looking at parts that I have to buy about $350 in electronics (servos board) and another $100-$150 in hardware and extrusions and print out the rest and I am good to go?

Is that correct?
