I would try ducting the air to blow just from the left and right side of your J-head.

That is probably the best way to go. I should be able to get less air resistance that way as well. I would say almost 80% of the airflow is reflected due to the very non-ideal configuration of that duct.

Also, how is the MK V working out on your printer? I am thinking about ordering a Mk V-B.

It is quite good so far. I have the BV version from hotends.com. I like the thermistor placement since it allows for very accurate readings of the hot-end temperature compared to Solidoodle's solution.

I have had a few clogs with it so far, and they all seemed to happen around the same short period of time. In each case I cleared it instantly and easily with a guitar string, so it was only a minor nuisance. It may have been a problem with humidity, or some contamination residing near the nozzle.

I was able to get away with using solder joints directly for the resistor and thermistor connections (no crimping). I am not sure I would recommend this to others since it could turn out badly, but I think the key is just to use mainly uninsulated wire for most of the length from the hotend so that it can radiate heat before it reaches the joint. I electrically insulated each wire with a little kapton tape. It has been holding strong for a few months now.

I am having some difficulty coming up with a way to create a good ducted fan to use in conjunction with my J-Head nozzle and Lawsy's MK IV mount. Has anyone else figured a good design for this?

The main issue is that there is not quite enough clearance under the X-Carriage to fit a good duct all the way around (at least I couldn't). I tried using a circular duct from Thingiverse (see picture) that I chopped to allow it to fit right up to the x-carriage. I made a separate bracket to mount it. Unfortunately, the air flow was too weak in the back, so the back side did not cool properly.

To test the performance of cooling, I printed a single 6x6x40mm vertical block. If cooling is working well, it should not smear or warp during the print (or at least be a lot better when cooling is turned on).
