As I am from Europe and I didn't want to pay again insane import taxes for Filawinder I decided to build my own Filament winder based on electronics I have at home (old 3d printers).
So my (almost) final design is made of:
Electronics:
1 Nema 17 motor + A4988
1 28BYJ-48 5V motor + control board
1 optical endstop
1 Arduino Mega
1 Arduino Mega Terminal Block Shield (optional)
LCD 20x4 + 5 buttons (taken from my CTC 3d printer -> MakerBot Replicator clone)
5 ambient light sensors
1 laser module
12V power supply
Mini 7~28V to 5V Step-down Converter

Hardware:
Bunch of cables, connectors, M3 screws, and nuts
8mm 130mm long threaded rod
6 5mmx3mm round magnets
2 608zz ball bearings (skateboard ball bearings)
1 Power socket with switch

From the features:
- Adjustable winding speed, winding direction -> saving and loading settings in EEPROM
- Calibration of spool size for filament guide system (filament guide synchronized with winding rotation: move for 1.7mm every full rotation)
- Saving and loading from EEPROM default spool size if you are always using the same one
- Laser sensors status monitor
- Live speed adjustment during winding

For now, this is everything I came up with.
As you can see I have to redesign the electronics box but I am still waiting for A4988 interface board to have it mounted nicer than now. If you have any feature suggestions based on your experience they will be more than welcome.

Today I tested it as spools rewinding machine. I think it is working fine...

If anyone will be interested in this DIY project I can make some better descriptions and upload the files to Thingiverse. For now, I am still waiting for virgin material to start testing my Filastruder and DIY Filament winder setup.
