I have a lot better function when I allow the remaining material to be extruded as much as it can prior to cool down. I will let it run "dry" for a pretty good amount of time. Otherwise, it takes FOREVER to loosen up again if there's too much molten material in the pipeline. If the machine had multiple melt zones and a stronger motor, you could probably just turn it off with material inside... but it doesn't.

I'm pretty sure I've seen other people suggest letting it run until nothing comes out any more.

Hello Filastruder wizards,

I was wondering how to properly shutdown and startup the fillastruder.
I read somewhere that you shouldn't let an extruder run dry but I also read that you shouldn't just leave any polymer to solidify in the barrel.

For context I'm planning to extrude a POM copolymer with a processing temp of 185 - 195 °C and a relatively low melt flow (MFI=9 gr/10min & MVR=8 ml/10min).

Should I just leave it in there to solidify and then heat it up the next time before starting the screw or should I empty the barrel after each use?
