I used Mineral oil with best long term results. also for brake fluid in the Renwal Visible Chassis so the screws inside dont rust and ruin things. it also keeps rubber from cracking. Vaseline and/or mink oil is what i have always used on leather boots and rubber scuba gear to keep things soft and fog free and I have a Coral brand Scuba Mask etc from 1974 in like new condition plus Chlorine pools will dry out rubber and ruin it very fast if not protected same way,  like the O rings in divers watches.

Anything not petro based should be fine. But if they are that snug then it sounds like you need to take your design back to the drawing board and increase or decrease the size of one half.
