Steppers often go bad especially if they are being over driven like so many machines do. Let me just say if you can hear your printer in the same room chances are your motors are being driven to hard. The only problem with a makerbot is those stepper drivers have a digital pot that is firmware controlled. That was one of the reasons i junked my stock board and went to an Azteeg.

I have a Makerbot Replicator 2X I have been having problms for the last 2 months.
per the recommendation of Makerbot support I have replaced the Nozzle assembly.
still had problem so I was told to replace mother board. all without warranty.
what it is doing is so many layers into the print the bed quits lowering causing the extruder to strip the filament.
sometimes it will go 15 layers and sometimes it will go 30 or more the layer height varies.
do you think it is wiring or the stepper motor. i have never seen a stepper go bad.
