Let me opine to the OP question. I am an Engineer and I work with materials on a daily basis as part of my job as a designer of machinery. To answer your question, the 8mm i.d. bearings sold by most 3d printing shops have a 15mm outside diameter and are 24mm in length. I don't know if these will fit the DaVinci x and y carrier but I guess I will check them out when I get home today. In addition, 1055 if even hardened to C58 –C65 is not the best material for these rods. Reason is unless you keep them well oiled, these rods will rust due to their .5 to .6% carbon content. Most rods sold in the Reprap market for your DIY builders are harden Stainless Steel, 303 to 83B (Brinell) which is equivalent to 63.3 Rockwell on the C scale. If you go to someone like www.servocity.com you can buy quality 8mm linear bearings and shaft for a reasonable price. Again, let me repeat, you should never run hardened bearings on a shaft that is not hardened as previously stated because you will ruin the shaft. Last point, in looking over my DaVinci, the rods are held in place with “snap rings” through the sheet metal walls. Servo city sells 1” X 1” aluminum hubs you can use to hold the rods in place but I have not looked into the space available to use these hubs in the DaVinci. This might be an option provided the linear bearings and bushings are same outside diameter. Hope this helps!
