Nice print. Is that the transition from .3mm to .1mm steps I see about 1/3 way up the body?
If so I do see the print quality difference but not as much as I would of thought going from .3mm to .1mm. Of course I am sure the pic does not do it justice and in person the difference is more noticeable.
Would you say a valid rough estimate of print time is that .1mm takes 3 times as long to print as .3mm? Seems logical but just curious if realistic.
Still waiting to receive my 3D printer and find all this quite fascinating.

]]> https://www.soliforum.com/user/2/ 2012-09-06T02:47:10Z https://www.soliforum.com/post/1029/#p1029 <![CDATA[Re: Rainbow Dash]]> Here is another Rainbow Dash, in .1mm translucent blue PLA.  The legs and bottom of the tail are actually .3mm by accident, so you can see a little comparison.  I had some trouble printing this in ABS, because some of the overhanging perimeters would tend to curl up as they cooled, and begin catching on the nozzle.  That might eventually cause a piece to get knocked off the bed, or if the nozzle hit it hard enough, a missed step and offset layers.  There were also a few bits of mane or wings along the way that begin above the platform where there is nothing to extrude onto, to the plastic would instead get wiped onto the rest of the model.

I printed this at 175C with the bed at 50C and a 120mm fan blowing over the whole build area.  Sliced in Slic3r.  Skeinforge kept trying to use too much plastic, making it look messy.

I keep getting requests for Princess Celestia, which hasn't been converted to a printable model on Thingiverse, so I might need to take up that challenge.

I'm going to try printing some large models, and the models were finished with 2 thin coats of acetone bushed on, and some little strings removed with an exacto knife. I probably spend 10 minutes finishing the models, I'm a bit meticulous.

It was done at 0.3mm. Also remember, my solidoodle has had NO calibration done by me, this is what prints I get with the calibration that came direct from the factory.

Yeah, I agree. It's super encouraging. I was a little worried after seeing some of Ian's first prints, but if this is just default than I am pumped.

Also Brad, have you tried printing anything that was 6 x 6? I'm just curious if prints come out alright when its set to its limit. I plan on making a lot of parts like intake manifolds, O2 housings and other car parts that are gonna be bigger than 6 x 6 x 6 and will have to be printed in parts and glued together. Just wondering if I'm gonna be running into trouble here.
