Hmmm. My first batch was done on boxes, clamps, etc because I was impatient to try it out. I have since made a dedicated wall mount and with the different geometries, the pulsing is greatly reduced. Almost winds smoothly/continuously. I guess the filament loop size, exit/entrance angle, etc, influence the overall feedback loop and I was creating an unstable system before. On my new setup the filament loop is shorter with less tendency to swing in response to winder advances.

Yeah, it doesn't seem to be impacting quality at all. I just thought it would be cool if it could converge on a continuous speed. Maybe I'll give it a shot.

It is possible with your approach for there to be times the motor is commanded to run at a speed that is too slow for it to maintain without stalling. There is no downside to running, shutting off, and running again, the loop height is held within about an inch which is what matters.

You can of course modify the firmware as you wish, since it is open source.

Got my filastruder and winder built up and am really happy with the results of my first batch. One thing I noticed, though, is the Filawinder does not settle in on a smooth constant speed in auto mode, but rather pulses in response to the sensor in a digital fashion. Is this expected? Anyone try to apply a low pass filter on the signal so the motor will instead run at a more constant speed?
