RAMPS can be very affordable and easy!
In an attempt to save to cash, I bought a Sainsmart RAMPS 1.4 and the Arduino 2560 shield from Micro Center. Collectively, I paid somewhere between $30-40. El Cheapo
Vouching on the ease of use and reliability, I would first like to point out that I fried, retardedized, and re-fried (with sparks!) the first 3 boards I toyed with: 1) Printrboard 2) RUMBA 3) Sanguinololu
With no experience with RAMPS, I was skeptical of my abilities and said "screw it...a drop in the bucket" if I screw up. After some confusion on the LCD firmware, I had for the first time not killed a board the first time I tinkered with it!

As slimstar mentioned, however, I already had wires/plugs/USB, stepper drivers, and aforementioned LCD. After some resistance, I ultimately tried and instantly liked it. As popular as RAMPS is I expected a bit more info on the wiki before making my purchase, but it really is fairly straightforward.

EDIT:
Re: Ski regarding Printrboard vs RAMPS
If you blow a stepper driver on the Printrboard, you are either buying a new board, or out of a printer until you master your ninja-like soldering skills since it has integrated drivers. RAMPS, RUMBA, SANG and Azteeg have replaceable stepper drivers. This makes it great for maintenance, upgrading, and simple swaps in case of failure or poor performance. The drivers are extra, but worth every penny in the long run.

If you just consider that uploading the software / firmware to it is the same as an Arduino .........it's a winner for me . The fact that you can try software tweaks you want with no problems and no worries that you're gonna have a headache uploading it ........ it's another winner . The fact that you can have 4 or more spares laying around just in case a spike hits or some other act of god (or your accidental dropping a screwdriver into the board) .....it's a three time winner .

need I continue? Oh yea it can also have more options,,,,, and it is much easier to control with the LCD ...........and can print without being connected to a computer ( SD card printing ) ....... and tweaking the speed and flow rate on the fly .......

Bill D

Ski52 , Slimstar2 here , I had a lot of trouble getting my SD3 to program 3 times (kept having mother board failures ) . Finally took someones advice (I think it might have been Wardjr's or Azerate ) I changed to a very cheap ( less than 1/4 the price of original Rev E boards) RAMPS 1.4 Setup . It is so easy to program (Cause it is an Arduino Mega + RAMPS) It is very easy to install thanks to this forum and all the great help everyone here is willing to give. And it does more than Rev E MB can do. Including a LCD controller panel . I paid $179 for original MB from SD ( 2 times), the complete kit on E bay from $incitycoins included LCD,MB ,Ramps board, drivers, all wiring, etc was $45. AND FREE SHIPPING. So if you want to get away from all that nonsense of flashing this a much better way to go. IMHO My SD3 has Blue tooth ,2 bed heaters ,2 power supplies ,LCD panel and check this IT PROGRAMS WITH ANY ARDUINO IDE I am presently using 1.6.6 It WILL PROGRAM WITH WINDOWS 8.0, 8.1 and yes even WINDOWS 10 with NO SPECIAL EFFORT AT ALL. Adrian has made a tremendous guide in this forum under Hacks & Mods on converting to RAMPS. He even put STL files for the mounts !
You should check it out. I know your problem is solved but if you want to play with your settings and add fans or lights or extruders the RAMPS 1.4 is cheap and easy and can do so much more than Rev E can do . Sincerely Bill D

PS ; I have include some photos of my backup unit I built last January in case I had a problem , but it has never been needed.
I went thru 3 SD Rev E MBs in 2014 so I planned ahead in 2015 but the RAMPS has been flawless.
