I did use support, you might be able to get away without support on the mothers head at 0.1mm or better, but the arms will definitely need supports.

Awesome! This is why I'm trying to save up for hardened nozzles...and materials to throw in my Filastruder. Maybe I should buy a roll and see how homemade composite filament compares...

Did you sand it first? Essentially you want to treat this just like wood. So my plan of action would be:

Print
Sand
Clean dust, etc off...
stain(apply, wipe off excess, let sit for much longer then the can says, wipe again, let dry)
Apply clear coat, lightly sand, and repeat for desired finish.

Hey Widespreadedhead, That does look great! I printed an owl in the hatchbox pla, and tried to put some minwax stain on it but it didn't seem to take at all. I didn't stain just to see if that made a difference but any thoughts on this?

Sanded down until the layer lines disappeared, applied stain and let dry, then one coat of polyurethane. It's that easy. I used a plastic bristle brush to buff the rough outside down, planning on applying another coat of polyu, but I liked the finish... and so did she!

I'm far from an expert, but it sure sounds like a duck! The reed is 3d printed and I think, like a few people in the thingiverse comments mentioned, if I cut some plastic from some electronics packaging, it'll be much louder.

That's pretty good! Does it seem that the printed duck call has the same acoustic properties as a 'real' wooden one?

Great stuff! Printed using my standard PLA settings, only had to up the hotend temp by 10C. Printed a few duck calls and sanded and stained the one on the left. It also has a Bronzefill ring on it. The one on the right is lightly sanded on the top to show color difference.
