I went a little overboard on the one I designed, uses a DC motor driving a 4 flute 3/8 end mill, chops the filament into nice tiny little pieces. While I do occasionally reprocess colored filament to even out the tint what I mainly use it for is getting rid of those too short to be of any real use pieces of filament left at the end of a roll. Chop up the remains and put them into the next batch of that color that goes through the filastruder, end of waste problem.

Strictly a manual feed at the moment, not a problem unless I want to do a entire roll, the short leftovers go through pretty quick just feeding by hand. The small end mill is spinning fast enough that the size is pretty uniform regardless of how fast or slow the filament goes in.

I like the design of the filament chipper. I'm interested in building one when the design is ready. I just started extruding and already have a little pile of out of spec and off-color filament from the beginning of extruding a new batch that could be re-used. And it would be interesting to run a colored batch through twice to compare. It LOOKS like it's all the same color, but I get color variation in the layers when I print with it. I don't mind for what I'm doing, but it's nice to have options.

I was checking out that wood chipper at Harbor Freight as well, I think it would be interesting to try. I have access to a bandsaw, so I could easily hack up parts small enough to fit in there. Being able to recycle a little would be nice, if I can avoid dumping in a landfill for a little extra effort, it's worth it. The $300 hand powered one was a bit much, but $100 for a motorized setup is doable.

With regards to the pelletizing, I'd say my color mixture is typically fine as it is when it's first extruded. But that rare occasion you end up with a brittle spot due to too much colorant in an isolated area (and it will happen) ruining a 24hr+ print.... I pelletize all the filament I color and re-extract. Without a doubt, better quality imo.
