You would still need to be able to remove the old part as the short would bypass the new part. But yes as long as you could find a TO-220 equivalent and make secure solder connections to the existing pads it would work.

How exactly is the bed wired? Is wired directly to the board? Id so then it sounds like the MOSFET on your 2 in 1 is shorted.
