Because I work at a school there is no shortage of laptops, so here I have a laptop running RH for our workbench and run the MakerBot software for our Mini, although the wifi connection on the Mini is garbage.

At home, however, I run OctoPi with a raspicam. I love it. Great interface, and the time lapse settings for recording are nice too.

To update firmware (if it involves arduino IDE urrrrggghh) I'd connect the printer back to the computer, but all printing happens over octoprint. Now I'm so lazy I update smoothieware and the config using the raspberry pi though an SSH terminal, which is super easy.

I have a couple of issues with the octoprint interface (particularly the lack of detail in the temperature plot: only plots temps it recognises, even though the ones it doesn't are in a consistent format, and no power plotting), but they're nothing insurmountable day-to-day and the flexibility it offers is great.

I have a graphic LCD on mine with a 4GB SD card in it, and I don't think I ever used it as a standalone, it's always connected to my PC.

The only time I ruined a print was when I installed something on my PC while a print was running, and that particular piece of software forced a reboot after installation without a prompt, so that killed the print job

On the other hand, I also have a PrintrBot Simple, and I used the MicroSD in it quite a few times.

I have octopi setup, an LCD controller setup and repetier on my pc all for controlling my printer. I switch between them periodically. Usually if I need my pc for some work or games. But mainly do it just to make sure they all stay working I guess. Any one else have multiple controllers setup and switch between them for reasons or not?
