I know this is a common problem, but I'm frustrated because I can't solve it. I updated the firmware on my Melzi v 2.0 on Reprap Tricolor mendel, and when I uploaded it using Arduino, I got error message avrdude: stk500_getsync(): not in sync: resp=0x00.

The following things have been tried/verified:

-The correct COM port is recognized and selected both by arduino as well as the computer device manager
-Correct board has been selected under Tools menu in Arduino
-The USB has been unplugged, replugged
-Computer restarted, Arduino restarted
-USB cable reset on the board before, during, after upload

Still no luck. Arduino doesn't establish a connection. I'm also seeing that when I try to connect to pronterface (this is stupid of me), it does not connect to COM port in pronterface as well, so I'm trying to figure out the issue.
