my low tech solution is a bent up wire clothes hanger (idea borrowed from somebody else & modified to fit my printer) - cut the top part off (the part that hangs on the rod), bent the rest in half, made a loop with a couple of twists, then bent it out, down & around the stock SD4 spool holder brackets... the loop is bent close to the spool and centered to prevent the filament from jumping off the sides. haven't had any tangling problems so far... unless I forget to run the filament thru it.

The closer your setup is to a vertical feed the less problems you will have. That's pretty much all there is to it. Horizontal feed like on a stock Solidoodle introduces so many problems. The "perfect" setup puts the spool at the center of the print bed and offers no opportunity for distorting the filament. Most crucial is that the filament spool is up higher than the extruder. Horizontal feed systems put excessive strain on the xy drive system and extruder drive gear. The difference between the two setups is visible in prints, it matters that much.

My spool just sits on a shelf above the printer riding on a frame with bearings. I keep the spool against the wall so it take a slight amount of force to turn the spool. That way the spool only turns when the extruder pulls on it and stops as soon as it stops. There is no unrolling or spilling over the sides as the spool is always under tension.

I take old wire clothes hangers and bend a square U that fits close at sides of each size spool and barely clears edge of spool with short hooks bent inward so it just hangs on inner edge of spool under it so filament cant jump off at bottom as its being used and it glides along as spool turns. but I now have some spools with filament wound to outer edge so need to make some card stock discs to tape on sides of spool to keep slack fro hopping off top edge too. I dont like wasting material/time printing stuff to do the job as they seldom work anyway, plus add more drag on filament for extruder to tug and throw off hotend calibrations or damage extruder etc. I am going to print some thingiverse files that have hole adapters for all spools and use a bearing in center to make that easier on extruder though. but those are only ideas I have to prevent unraveling
