I wouldnt even know where to start to program that though.

If you are happy to play with firmware, Marlin has a feature called "auto fan" - look it up in the configuration.h and configuration_adv.h files. You can set a temperature threshold above which a fan turns on. Instead of connecting a fan to this output, you could connect an LED, and the LED will illuminate whenever the hotend temperature is above that set threshold, whether or not the heater is actively powered (so including cool-down).

You'd have to run a new pair of wires from the mainboard to wherever you'd like to locate that LED, and use a fan/spare output of some kind on the RAMPS. 1kOhm resistor + LED as above, same idea, but connected to the board like an extra g-code fan.

Kronikabuse wrote:

Is it possible to hook up LED's to the heater wires? I want them to be lit when the heaters are active.

Easy - you need an LED and a resistor. The heater is 12V supply when on, so you'll want a resistor of about 1kOhm.

Negative/cathode/flat/short leg of the LED gets soldered to the heater negative wire, positive/anode/round/long leg of the LED to the resistor, and the other end of the resistor to the positive heater wire. The heater itself is not polarized, but you'll have to match up with the +/- connection on the main board.

From a practical point of view, be careful of leaving any of the connections exposed - it's a high-current supply, so a short between the two heater cables will make some heat! Also could damage your board. So make sure you use electrical tape / heatshrink to insulate the connections well. Of course keep solder joints and these components away from the actual heater block, they may not like the high temperatures.

The LED will only be on when the heater is powered - so it will flicker when the heater is at temperature and the PWM is operating.
