You also don't want to do this calibration at a high speed. Use an extrusion speed of 100mm/min or so. E3D showed in their Midwest RepRap Fesrival talk that gear slip is a real thing, so you want to go pretty slowly to get it dialed in. Ideally you would determine the value theoretically using the diameter of the hobbed gear at the teeth, and then verify how close the theoretical value is. This is what I did with the new drive gear I put on my Solidoodle.

The 100mm is standard regardless of extruder. If your MK9 is too fast not sure what you mean by that? If you say extrude 100mm you should get 100 mm regardless of feed speed. Extruder speed should never be fast though. If you get more then reduce steps per mm. If you get less then increase them.

So I was thinking the usual calibration for the davinci is to measure 100mm of filament and extrude to figure out steps per mm. But my mk9 has a shorter extruder so I don't think the 100mm trick would work for me because its extruding filament faster than the davinci extruder.
