ok wanted to give an update. it seems i'm able to print small parts but anything of a larger size i'm getting very frustrated and am not sure what to do at this point
calibrated the bed
greased the bearings and the rods
replaced a malfunctioning heatsink and fan for the extruder.
calibrated the extruder
installed fans over the control board to cool it

I checked the stepper motor last night one felt very hot but i just realized that it runs the x plane so its my y stepper motor that possibly has a problem. So i guess now i need to recheck the belts and pullies to see if they have the right tension on them

I did order a plain heatsink for the stepper motors but that will be several days to see if that helps.

Oh and had one question what size is the lock nuts for the solidoodle printer
any other ideas?

yes using painters tape i'd been doing glass and aquanet previously but had been having real problems with adhesion. i've actually been using the painters tape and hair spray and had some that it adhered so strongly that the tape pealed up with the print.

but will try with the brim. this print was kind of atest of one i'd had screw up on me way earlier before i had the fans over the control board.so feels good it went about 3/4 before screwing up but will try the other ideas

so i'll re rig the glass bed and i guess i should go and recheck the extrusion calibration.

Grob is correct on the Y shifting There can be a few causes for this:
*Overextrusion which would then snag the nozzle causing a *thunk* sound
*Belts misaligned
*Y pulleys snagging in the brackets
*Loose belt tension

As for the lifting, the steps taken to prevent it, in my experience, would depend on the material you are printing with. Since I see painter's tape, can I assume PLA?
If so, ditch the tape. while it may combat lifting, larger and high infill prints will be a problem. Glass with Aquanet at 60c will make the adhesion rock solid. Also add a fan on the nozzle to actively cool the extruded material. Opening/removing your enclosure will help for long PLA prints as well.
If ABS:
Return to my comment on glass and hairspray. It is a golden setup there!
For troublesome prints, you can add a brim or even a high skirt to reflect the heat onto the print base.
.ABS cools too fast
PLA takes longer to cool.

Ok, I have a couple of ideas. Looks like layer shifting as the steppers are missing steps, and mostly in the y-axis. There are many possible reasons for this, and the main one I can think of (especially as after a specific point it happens only a little bit, and nearly every layer) is the nozzle running into the print at the ends where it's peeling up:

First thing I'd do here is add a brim to the print in slic3r and try again. Go for about 5mm and see how you go. It probably will be enough to hold the print down for long enough to get through, and they can be quite easily peeled/cut off afterwards.

And if you keep having issues, don't panic, there are plenty of further things that can be done.

Otherwise, looks good!

So i've been working on my printer to get it to print i've added the 2 fans mod over the board. its spliced into the led lighting.and i had a very good print going but then it screwed up. and since i wasn't here i don't know exactly why it screwed up but. I'm not sure where to go from here.

I've uploaded 2 photos of the latest print. any help would be appreciated.

I am wondering if its maybe the stepper motors and what i can do about that. don't get me wrong this is the best print (sigh) i've gotten in a long time
