Simply try and upload the firmware of your choice by hitting reset on the board and the upload button in arduino.
If it works you have a Bootloader.
The instructions in the WIKI should match up with your board fairly closely.
You'll want this firmware https://github.com/ozadr1an/Solidoodle- … in_v1_beta

What have you connected the new fan to? How has it been wired? If you want a gcode-controlled fan (and have wired it to the board) your instinct is right, you'll likely need to update the firmware to make it work.

A solid firmware for the SD3 is here (it's a stable and functional version; the Marlin project it's based on is in a bit of a state of mad development at the moment so I'm pretty sure you don't want the "latest" version...).

Search the forum for the procedure to update the solidoodle board; I'd guess you have a SD printrboard rev E if the machine isn't very old.

Good luck, if you have trouble performing the update (and searching isn't finding the answers!) then let us know.
