I see what you mean about not looking very effective, really does not look like it does much but I guess it circulates air a little. Problem now is I can't get it off, it looks like it is press fitted onto 2 plastic nubs and it won't come off despite some effort, I'm afraid ill break it if I put any more pressure on it. Is there a trick to getting it to pop off?

Yeah. I don't know that it's really effective, since it's mostly obstructed by the case and trying to push air through a tiny part of the slot in the bottom. I'm thinking of putting some ducting over the motherboard (and Raspberry pi when I do octoprint mod) to actually pass air over the motherboard.

Oh I have taken that off to adjust my stepper motor driver voltage (was way off for me also) but it did not seem like there was enough space to access a fan through there so I did not even look when I started getting the noise. I'll check it out tonight, thanks.

I had a similar issue, however it didn't go away, even after being on an hour. There is a fan at the bottom, left side (i think it's left anyway) for the motherboard. You need to undo the two screws on the hatch at the bottom and remover the panel, which also has the motherboard attached. Pull all of the wires away from the side where the fan is so none will dangle, hitting the fan. While you're there, if you have a multimeter, I'd also check the voltage settings of all the stepper drivers. Mine were WAY off spec.
