Topic: Solidoodle Press Print Quality (and how to fix it)

Now that I've worked through the initial issues with my Press, my attention has turned to print quality. For the most part, the print quality is ok, but I'm getting some noticeable "wobble" in my print jobs. If I could get this print quality issue hammered out that would be great.

Re: Solidoodle Press Print Quality (and how to fix it)

I seem to have a bit of a wobble in my test prints. I'm new to 3D printing and I've tried running through the calibration but don't know the right way to reduce or eliminate it.

It looks to me like you are over extruding which is causing the nozzle to drag on the previous layer.
Either calibrate the Steps per mm or try and fudge it with the extrusion multiplier.  Depending on what your running for software.

Moire is present. You need to adjust your trimpot for the extruder motor. I am planning to do some sort of writeup for this but I cant print atm.

It is possible you are over extruding a little but adjusting this wont solve the root cause of the problem.

Re: Solidoodle Press Print Quality (and how to fix it)

Could you post the .stl file, so we can try the same print?  So many different calibration/test models out there.

Re: Solidoodle Press Print Quality (and how to fix it)

This has been my best print so far. As you can see, it wasn't quite perfect.

Another member tried to print this same model with a very similar failure. Apparently the press wants this guy to wear a hat or something.

Re: Solidoodle Press Print Quality (and how to fix it)

I got a bit of moire, but i have to say that is pretty acceptable at .3mm ABS, quality hasn't been an issue for me so far.

Sure! I grabbed what I thought was a reasonable test print from here: thingiverse.com/thing:170922 and printed it at 1.5X size (because at 1:1 size the extruder took off the little tower when it finished.)

The over extrusion seems like a reasonable and easy thing to test out. I'll try that out next, and I i'll be waiting to see your write upon how to trim the extruder motor!

the waving octopus model is here - http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:27053 as Dream-Cypher said, I had the exact same result.  I'd like to see if anyone else gets the same if they try it.

I guess mine was actually this remixed "with following eyes" version.  http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:238073

It's actually a rather easy task but the way the board is mounted makes it a pain to run the printer and also have access to the board for adjustments at the same time.

you're right - the one I printed also has the eyes.  the filename I downloaded is CuteOctoFollowingEyes_V2.stl, size is 3,527,084 bytes.

Re: Solidoodle Press Print Quality (and how to fix it)

Moire, ... Ya, that's the problem I'm having too. I've already reduced the Extrusion Multiplier from .7 to .65. That seems to help, but if I reduce it more than that, gaps started to appear in the print.

If I can get this moire issue fixed, that would be sweet.

Re: Solidoodle Press Print Quality (and how to fix it)

Find the stepper driver and adjust the trimpot.  A little goes a long way and you'll want to use a non metallic screwdriver.  It sounds like you can't reach it during printing so you may just have to tweak it and test print a few times until it is just right.

Heres an alien I Sculpted on the computer and 3d printed.  Pretty good quality if I could get the print to finish all the way.

I printed the same test print as above, and also have some moire.

I also managed to print a skull cap for my octopus.  I misjudged the size a little, which gives him a goofy look. smile

Re: Solidoodle Press Print Quality (and how to fix it)

Has anyone adjusted the trimpot on there solidoodle press? How do you gain access to the trimpot? Once I've gained access to the trimpot, which trimpot do I adjust?

Re: Solidoodle Press Print Quality (and how to fix it)

They are usually marked For each motor.  Make sure you use a non metallic screwdriver.

To do this I took two large books and spread them on a table (just wide enough for the press feet to sit on) so that I could run the printer with the board/cover removed.

http://www.soliforum.com/topic/4759/new … -problems/

From post 11 (user ne14pez):

1) Locate the trimpot on the motherboard for the extruder motor (trimpots are the small white things that you can turn with a mini flathead screwdriver.  On my motherboard, the extruder trimpot is the highest one on the left side).
2) Turn it all the way down (counter-clockwise).  Should not take much force.
3) In Repetier, set your extrusion speed to 5 (slow), and extrude something like 25mm or so.  You should be able to hear the motor moving.
4) Slowly turn the trimpot up (clockwise) and listen for any changes in the motor noise.  For me, the motor started out smooth and started pulsing at around 45 degrees.  The pulsing is the sound of the motor jumping between steps (hence "stepper motor") and is also what causes the moire effect.  Anything above 45 degrees resulted in heavy pulsing (before this experiment, it was at 90 degrees).  Back the trimpot down to just barely under the threshold of where the pulsing starts.  Voila!  No more moire!!

Borrowed picture from MacGyverX of Press Board. Trimpot circled in Red is what you are looking for. I ended up disconnecting the extruder fan temporarily so that I could better hear the motor.

I am going to have to give this a go. I have some substantial Moire.

Re: Solidoodle Press Print Quality (and how to fix it)

DePartedPrinter,

Thank's for the instructions. I'm sure many people will find them useful. Last night, I made the effort to adjust the trimpot. I did the adjustment during a series of small prints. I turned the trimpot a quarter of a turn clockwise until I was happy the the issue was more or less gone.

Very excited to have this issue resolved.

Tony

Happen to have a pic of what needs to be opened/disassembled to get to the pots?  I need to make the same adjustment.

why did not solidoodle do this trimpot calibration them selfs ? so we need open and void our warranty  do everyone have the same moire problem?
