Topic: Brush on smooth coating

Looks promising, and you're not removing material to get it smooth.  Maybe more of the detail would be preserved over the vapor method or of course more than sanding.

No bites on this?  I thought some of you would jump all over it.

Re: Brush on smooth coating

Well, I have all the parts printed for my sonic screwdriver, but I'm just planning to use sanding, acetone, and paint on them. If I'm disappointed in that, maybe I'll try again with this new goop :-). I do wonder how much thicker it makes the parts after coating.

Just in case there are any other Aussies wondering about this stuff, Rowe Trading will have some in about 8 weeks thanks to yours truly annoying them to get some in tongue

Re: Brush on smooth coating

This looks like some awesome stuff.  I've been doing resin casting, so it would be nice to have an already smooth part to make a mold with.  It just makes more sense to do all the hard work on one part THEN make copies.

Bowden SD3, Rumba, E3D hotend, Mk5 with RtRyder changes, Direct drive Y axis and bearings, GT2 pulleys and braided fishing line, Lawsy linear bearing conversion, M3 Z screw.

Re: Brush on smooth coating

the product site http://www.reynoldsam.com/product/xtc-3d/ has a video titled "How add color and effects to a 3d printed part ..." that shows my Miniature Taj Mahal, http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:11182

Would have been nice if they had abided by the license: "Miniature Taj Mahal - Updated 9.3.2011 by tc_fea is licensed under the Creative Commons - Attribution - Share Alike license"

i.e. the "attribution" part where they mention where they got the model from.

The material did look make the taj mahal model look nice.

I wonder how is is different from regular 2 part epoxy resin.

Re: Brush on smooth coating

I'm going to try using my resin as a filler and see how it comes out.   Lots of people buying things want injection molded smoothness, which is a good bit extra work.

Re: Brush on smooth coating

I saw a post from someone who worked on its development, and they said the formulation was fine tuned to get a viscosity and wetting action that works best for the typical roughness of a 3D printed part.

Yep, I tried to like it but its just overly complicated for an epoxy finish. 1:2 ratio unnecessary annoying, pretty ehh sanding results.
Almost always felt rubbery even with the ratio measured using a digital scale.
Oh and takes ten weeks to arrive in Oz.. Which may or may not have biased me against it.

On the bright side I've since worked out that ZAP's Z-poxy finishing resin works much better, at least on PLA.
1:1 ratio, cheaper per ml than XTC and sands really quite well. I'll be testing it properly with a few .6 meter projects in the next few weeks.
Here are some pix of the ZAP stuff, lightly sanded on the flatter areas of a part printed with the previous-and-now-replaced Z screws of my Ord Bot.

Okay, I'll bite. A gallon of epoxy resin runs around $60, or about $3 for 6 ounces vs. the $10 these guys are charging. To thin the viscosity, mix it with toluene, which runs around $30 per gallon. If the mixture is half and half, that makes 6 ounces worth about two bucks --- RETAIL. In other words, it sounds like some drunk is mixing the stuff in his basement and selling it at a 1000% markup.

Plus it'd make it easier to leave town in the middle of the night when people you've ripped off on the fillastrudle scam want their money back.

+100

A) The Filastruder is proven to work if one were to put the time, effort, and knowledge into it. The products and service he provides is top notch. And he makes ZERO money from "trolling" on a topically selective forum.
B) Can we please have the previous comments either moved to a "hate thread" or removed? This has nothing to do with this thread...though entertaining! smile

Printit Mason and Printit Horizon printers
Multiple SD2s- Bulldog XL, E3D v5/v6/Lite6, Volcano, Hobb Goblin, Titan, .9 motor, Lawsy carriages, direct Y drive, fishing line...the list goes on
Filawinder and Filastruder #1870.....worth every penny!

Yes please! If I wanted random drama, I would go back to watching TV...

In regards to the smoothing epoxy; Does anyone have an idea of it's buildup thickness? It might be nice to use, but my stuff still have to fit together predictably.

But drama on the internet is soooo amusingly pointless!
The build thickness is largely self determined with ones brushing. Its easy enough to spread a small amount around without causing problems.
