Topic: Wiring Bundle Guide

This is a take on jon_bondy's belt shield posted here... http://www.soliforum.com/topic/331/wiri … n-by-case/

I liked his initial design but it didn't allow for me to continue to use my case and it didn't guide the wire bundle up into the gap he had designed into the part.  I redesigned it to be much thinner and to be able to just friction hold the top lip of the printer frame.  It allows you to continue to use your case while only raising it up 0.1".  I have included the file for some spacers if you want to raise the opposite side by a tenth of an inch as well.

So far it seems to be holding up pretty well.

Note: make sure you rotate the part so it prints vertically.

Looks good. Think I will add to mine as well. Thanks!

Re: Wiring Bundle Guide

Looks good!  Does the carriage not run into the shield when the extruder head is all the way in the back left of the bed?

Re: Wiring Bundle Guide

Well done!  I was going to do this same thing eventually.  I was actually thinking of mounting magnets into it and clipping it on the underside but if the case still fits it doesn't much matter.

If you have the carriage all the way to the outside of the bed it might have an issue with running into the wire connections coming off the extruder (how often are you printing this close to the edge though?).  I have printed plenty of parts that were fairly close to the edge of the bed and have not run into any issues yet.

I considered magnets but I was worried the pressure of the wire bundle pushing against it would break it off while I wasn't paying attention and damage the printer.  It will work fine with the case but the screw holes will no longer line up (I didn't think this would be an issue for me as I have the case off and on so much I never bother to secure it).

Re: Wiring Bundle Guide

I made one using magnets and have been using it for a couple days without problems. Used Ø.25 x .3/16 N42 NI magnets.

I don't print that big of parts very often, but that is precisely when I am most concerned about the interference and extra wire friction. When it is not over that far there is enough play that there is not a lot of friction, but when I am all the way over there, the bundle gets scrunched up and can actually grab the teeth of the belt as well as rub against the frame edge.

Re: Wiring Bundle Guide

I've never had wire bundle issues, but I went ahead and installed this one anyway. Love it!

That was one of the problems I was having (bundle grabbing on the teeth of the belt).  I'm not sure it was actually causing any problems with prints but it sure doesn't seem like it would be very good long term. Kinda surprised Solidoodle has not addressed this problem (although it sounds like the wire bundle issue is kinda hit or miss).

Re: Wiring Bundle Guide

DPP,

Thanks for the advice on how to properly print out your Wire Bundle Guide.  As I mentioned on the other thread, my print came out virutally perfect in only 90 minutes using Pronterface/Skeinforge.

I noticed that I lose about 1/2" (maybe a bit less) of X travel when the print head goes all of the way left.  The wire bundle will get bunched up and I can hear the X stepper losing steps.  This occurred during my initial tests of the X/Y travel when I initially installed the WBG. I haven't actually done a print since I installed the WGB, so I'm not sure how often I will (or even if) have a problem during actual printing.

It appears that there is some horizontal space available between the lower section of the WGB and the belt such that the WGB lower section could be moved left.

Another solution to the wire bundle problem might be to have the wire bundle come out the back of the print head instead of coming out to the left like it does now.

I could probably build the guide with a tighter tolerance to the belt but I wasn't sure how it was going to actually look/function so I left some space. I have an idea for a future system that would eliminate the wbg all together. We will see if I get around to building it...

Re: Wiring Bundle Guide

Printed the spacers today and I highly recommend them for anyone using the wiring guide.  I guess I just got used to the rattling but these clips really make a difference.

Re: Wiring Bundle Guide

Went to adjust my Y belts today and have noticed that my wiring bundle now has wear on it from it rubbing on this guide.  So I would only recommend installing this if you have issues to begin with.

I just took my wire bundle apart to check for wear and I couldn't find any.  I found wear on the printed guide (minor) but not on the bundle itself.  Maybe you print much more than I do.

Re: Wiring Bundle Guide

This little machine is printing everyday when I get home from work.

I should probably print another guide now that I dont have  banding and give it a brush or 2 over some acetone to really smooth it out.

Re: Wiring Bundle Guide

Would this fit an SD3, and if not, is there an SD3 version around?  I tried a search but I'm not sure what to search on.

Re: Wiring Bundle Guide

should be fine if they're using the same type of steel frame.  The only thing this relies on is fit to the frame.  There should be a derivation print that uses magnets instead of sliding on.

It should fit fine. If you want it longer adjust your x scale before rotation.

Re: Wiring Bundle Guide

I was wondering if it would work on the S3 as well. The wire bundle comes through the center hole on the S3, not the hole on the left as it appears to on the S2. My wires loop down towards the bed. They appear to get pretty close to the belts, but haven't caught on anything yet. For me to use the guide I'd have to figure out how to train the wires to loop towards the left instead of down. Not sure how easy this would be....

Re: Wiring Bundle Guide

Got a point there, TiM.  SD3s do go through the center hole and therefore are not subject to the rub from the side frame.  You may have to build some kind of a holder that goes underneath the cable and prevents it from hitting the belts.  Not quite sure what that would look like...

Re: Wiring Bundle Guide

I  am running my sd2 thru the center hole using a filament bushing because the hole is a different size than the left one.
Running the filament thru the same hole.
I also have the extruder bundle  on the top.  Rotated the extruder  heat sink 90 degrees and used a zip tie to secure the wire bundle.
Works great.
Going to make a tube to keep the filament from wearing the bundle cover on the iase hole.
