Topic: E3D releases v6 - their latest all-metal hotend

E3Dv6 is here!

Check out this blog post for the gory details, or watch this video for a brief overview:

  1. Compact size.
v6 is now 62mm in overall length, and the new polycarbonate fan duct results in significantly less bulk in X and Y dimensions.

  2. Easy assembly and maintenance.
All assembly is performed by either clipping or screwing together parts, no messy Kapton or adhesives are needed – The thermistor secures with a neat screw clamp and is insulated with high temperature glass fibre sleeving. Supplied ferrules mean that no soldering is needed.

  3. Fast heat-up and better temperature readings.
The heater cartridge is secured with a wrap-around clamp for excellent thermal contact, this reduces warm-up times and increases temperature control. The thermistor has been placed deep into the block and near to the nozzle in a close fitting hole for the most accurate readings and fast response.

  4. Overhauled manufacturing techniques for increased reliability.
The heatbreak has a radically improved surface finish stemming from updated manufacturing techniques. The nozzle has been optimised for easier flow at low pressures.

  5. Improved performance with flexible materials.
Internal PTFE tubing runs deep into the hotend and can be arranged so that flexible filaments are constrained in the PTFE tubing right from the drive gear to deep in the hot end. PTFE never enters hot areas and so high temperature capability is maintained.

  6. Maintains Compatibility.
By keeping the previous mounting dimensions compatibility has been maintained with the plethora of community created mounting systems. Nozzles have kept their M6 threaded dimensions and so are interchangeable between v5 and v6.

  • Universal 1.75mm HotEnd
The incredibly compact tubing coupling system that is internal to the hotend means that we are able to eliminate the 1.75mm Direct and 1.75mm Bowden products and replace them with a single 1.75mm Universal product.

Full disclosure: I am Tim Elmore from FIlastruder, a US distributor of E3D's hotends. I felt this section was appropriate as this is a brand new product, but I did want to disclose conflict of interest.

With that said, this weekend you can use the coupon code "LikeAv6" for 10% off. That brings the total cost to $74.99 shipped.

Re: E3D releases v6 - their latest all-metal hotend

I just saw the email for it.  Looks like they made some great improvements.  I've spent enough on my printer for a bit sadly hmm.  I think I can still make a decent dual setup with the stock end and the v5 though!  If I end up ordering any I'll be sure to go through you Tim.  I was too anxious and didn't think about it last time!

Bowden SD3, Rumba, E3D hotend, Mk5 with RtRyder changes, Direct drive Y axis and bearings, GT2 pulleys and braided fishing line, Lawsy linear bearing conversion, M3 Z screw.

Re: E3D releases v6 - their latest all-metal hotend

Shame I just bought the E3D v5 last week, I have't even got it set up working yet. Maybe i'll have to upgrade and sell the E3D v5 off. Hmmm

Re: E3D releases v6 - their latest all-metal hotend

I idea that it does flexiable materials better is SO tempting....is there anything like that guide tube for the E3D v 5?

The tube is more for a bowden rather than direct feed. However, this user posted his experience without switching to bowden and found the tube he used fits atop the MK5 pretty well.

Re: E3D releases v6 - their latest all-metal hotend

Are you going to have the new thermistors with fiberglass sleeves? That would make it so much easier to replace it, even on the v5. I hate the way it is now, having to tape it on.

Re: E3D releases v6 - their latest all-metal hotend

I'm curious, is there a reason from an engineering standpoint to have the nozzle a separate part to the barrel?
Not meaning to be rude about it, Just curious about the physics of it.

I do like the single piece design of the Prometheus myself Serin.

Lots of reasons.

1.) makes it financially reasonable to have many nozzle sizes on hand
2.) you want the "barrel", or heatbreak, to have different thermal properties. Nozzles should be easy to machine and conduct heat really well (brass), and the heatbreak should not conduct heat well (stainless steel)
3.) much easier to machine in two separate pieces

Thanks! I just read it under compatibility...this is what happens when you don't read far enough.

Re: E3D releases v6 - their latest all-metal hotend

So, the filastruder page mentions the lawsy mk5 isn't compatable with the e3dv6.  What extruder would you need then, to get the v6 working on a solidoodle?

Re: E3D releases v6 - their latest all-metal hotend

One doesn't exist yet, MK5 needs to be modified.

Re: E3D releases v6 - their latest all-metal hotend

E3D V-6 MK-5
For those of you that are lucky enough to receive your V-6 shortly.  This MK-5 "SHOULD" work until one of us has a chance to completely redesign a new one.  This version doesn't need the locking arm and you will still have to use the original guide and tension arm from lawsy's original design.  Print it Solid with ABS.  The new V-6 should just snap into the groove mount and I would guess it will be easier to do this prior to screwing it to the motor or carriage.  EXPECT some clean up.
There is one major issue facing users of the stock SD extruder carriage.  Because of the location of the two screws that mount the MK-5 to the carriage and the shorter design of the new V-6.  Moving the J-groove mount lower will work but it also moves the distance from the drive gear on the extruder motor to the top entrance of the V-6 apart by just over 3 mm's.  This shouldn't be an issue for ABS but for flexible filaments it further complicates things.  ((edit) PTFE to reach closer to the drive gear will solve this issue)  I will continue to work on a design to improve this situation but from the looks of things that is going to have to come from a redesign of the carriage itself.

If anyone gets their V-6 and gets the chance to verify if this fits please post for other users.

NOTE:  I have not tested this design and I won't be able to for some time.

Thank you to lawsy for the original design and allowing me to hack it up smile

As always Happy Printing smile

edit: Changed the file slightly to move the groove mount up .5mm

edit: edit:
Added the .skp for those of you that would like to make changes and or adjustments.

edit: edit: edit: Added Lawsy's .stl for the filament guide and tension arm.
Now all the files are in one location smile

That's okay, as v6 universal comes with 100mm of PTFE to constrain all the way to the drive hub!

I'll print and test one of these puppies tomorrow. Thanks as always!

Competition! Win a voucher for 50% of an E3D hot end!

So, this is the first wave of E3Ds that went out earlier this week:

Guess how many packages are in this picture, total. The rear seats are down. smile

Closest guess as of 5PM EST Sunday gets a voucher for 50% off an E3D hot end, v5 or v6.
