Topic: Lil test in smoothing PLA

First off I found this blog entry with smoothing PLA http://www.printedsolid.com/smoothpla/ and tried to replicate this.

Things to correct for next test
- I ran this through the process twice, next time only once at first
- More sanding needed before smoothing
- I got impatient, and turned the temp all the way up. I probably shouldn't of had

Notes:
- This PLA chess peice had some pretty bad over hangs in some parts. Wasn't the M.E.Ks substitutes fault
- I used the "Presto cooker"
- I made sure I did this outside
- Seems about as noxious as Acetone
- I went to the home depot and got Klean Strip MEK Substitute
- Treated it like a acetone vapor treatment
- I used purple translucent PLA for the print

Results:
- Took a lil longer for the MEK Substiute to vaporize, but not too much. Maybe goes at a higher temp
- Smoothed less then actone and ABS, but still a decent amount
- Some white areas created white lines but I think that is quite possibly my mistake on how I did the experient and running it in twice
- Tactile-wise  It seemed only a lil soft to the touch after 5 minutes. Less so then with ABS

I hope to try this again soonish (I have a E3D to install soon though! smile ))

Very cool! Last I read THF was just about the only option, so this quite nice.

Re: Lil test in smoothing PLA

Ok this time only once through. Presto cooker at 350. Enough MEK for a light cover of the bottom. Left in a minute after I saw the vapors. I may want to try 30 seconds next time since I'm getting areas of white as spots.

Re: Lil test in smoothing PLA

Better pic of the "after". Note the whiteish discoloration at the base, I think I need to leave it in less time.

Wow! This seems promising. I wonder why more people are not pushing this info. Nice work!

Re: Lil test in smoothing PLA

I do hope to play with this some more soon, try with it being in less time to hopefully avoid the white marks. I was leaving it in after the vapors started maybe a minute; So that maybe too long.

Re: Lil test in smoothing PLA

Here is 4 more PLA items smoothed with MEK Substitute.  Less time was better. Once I saw the vapors I kept it in 20-30 seconds.

Very cool. Seems like you are ahead of the curve in PLA smoothing provided my personal research.

Re: Lil test in smoothing PLA

A second time being smoothed showed some more improvements but not a great amount. Still not at the level of acetone smoothing but not bad either.

Re: Lil test in smoothing PLA

Note that it does not leave them super shiney like acetone smoothing. Though it does seem to retain some shinyness if the material was.

Re: Lil test in smoothing PLA

As another note. I didn't do any sanding for these tests so far

Re: Lil test in smoothing PLA

I used some gloss mod podge spray to make them shiney and that worked pretty well. At that point they almost look acetone smoothed but not quite.
