Topic: Slic3r Settings

Hi all,

I would like to start a topic sharing our custom settings for the Da Vinci printer, what resolutions, filament types,  speeds and outcomes we all get.

I have decided to use the Ultimaker robot as a test model as it is used in other resolution tests with other 3D printers, you can find it on Thingiverse if you search for 'Ultimaker robot'

If everyone could either take a screenshot of their Slic3r settings and attach a picture of the finished model we can get good results fast! Make sure you let us know the print temperatures and what filament you use!

Here are my current Slic3r settings:

Layer Height: 0.05mm
First Layer Height: 0.1mm
Perimeters: 3
Solid Layers: 3
Fill Density: 0.2
Fill Pattern: rectilinear

Speed
Perimeters: 60mm/s
Small Perimeters: 30mm/s
External Perimeters: 60%
Infill: 80mm/s
Solid Infill: 50mm/s
Top Solid Infill: 50mm/s
Support Material: 60mm/s
Bridges: 60mm/s
Gapfill: 20mm/s
Travel: 150mm/s
First Layer Speed: 30%

Filament
Extrusion Multiplier: 1

Temperature
Extruder: 220oC 210oC
Bed: 100oC 100oC

Retraction:
length: 2mm
Speed 30mm/s

-------

I am getting good quality prints with these settings, however the drop from 0.1mm resolution to 0.05mm resolution hasn't really made a difference.

The only issue with building the robot design is the supports for the arms do not have sufficient time to cool and usually end up failing. The same can be said for the bottom of the body of the robot.

If anyone has any suggestions for improving this, let me know!

I am not in the office at the moment, but I will upload the pictures as soon as I get in on Monday.

Good Luck!

Leigh.

Re: Slic3r Settings

This is a great idea. Thanks to your post I just learnt that I can use slic3r to create models etc. I'm totally new to 3D printing and just purchased a Da Vinci, it's great so far!

However I'm currently having a strange problem where on certain prints it decides to stop part-way through. I managed to print a 100mm+ tall pythagoras cup with no problems what-so-ever, but when I printed two parts to a rose petal sample it decided to stop and shut down about 2/3's the way through... it also did this with the "Sample" model stored in the printer.

Currently trying to work out whether it's a temperature issue or not. I'm running another dual "piece" print, so we shall see if that decides to stop. thankfully when it does decide to give up, it also switches off the nozzle and bed.

Meanwhile back on topic, I'll post my slic3r settings as soon as I get them worked out big_smile

real 0.1mm layer height is already really difficult on this type of FDM printer...

0.05mm is pure fantasy...

Re: Slic3r Settings

I am trying to get slic3r working, but after the first layer it seems to take off like a rocket and is printing way to fast.  I have not been able to get anywhere near the quality of prints I get with just using XYZWare.

I have tried a couple people's slic3r settings but it still just gets out of control after the first layer.  I feel like its almost using the travel speed as the printing speed, anyone else seeing this issue with slic3r?

Re: Slic3r Settings

I don't know if this will help as I go through it pretty quick. Let me know if I need to do another just on slic3r.

Re: Slic3r Settings

Hardware: Davinci 1.0
Firmware: Repetier 0.91 Alpha (From Github... BGM370)
Filament: 1kg Inland brand Black ABS (from Microcenter... $15)
Software: Pronterface
Slicer 1.1.7

Layer Height: 0.1mm
First Layer Height: 0.35
Perimeters: 3
Solid Layers: Top 3 Bottom: 3
Fill Density: 0.4
Fill Pattern: rectilinear
Top/Bottom Fill Pattern: Rectilinear

Perimeters: 30mm/s
Small Perimeters: 30mm/s
External Perimeters: 70%
Infill: 60mm/s
Solid Infill: 60mm/s
Top Solid Infill: 50mm/s
Support Material: 60mm/s
Bridges: 60mm/s
Gapfill: 20mm/s
Travel: 175mm/s
First Layer Speed: 30%

Diameter: 1.75
Extrusion Multiplier: 1.05
Extruder First Layer: 245  Other Layer: 240
Bed        First Layer: 115  Other Layer: 110

Bed Size      x200 y200
Print Center x129 y114 (Not true center... just a guesstimate)
Z offset: 2.4mm
Gcode Flavor: Rep Rap (Marlin/Sprinter/Repetier)

Nozzle Diameter: 0.4

Note: The threads were not perfect. It may be that my Z offset is too high, or that my bed needs leveling. Not sure yet. Not bad for the first successful print. Still better than what it was churning out on this part before reflashing the firmware. (Just FYI, this part was concieved as a screw on filler for unwanted holes in ceiling tiles. Obviously it is meant to be printed in white, but it's just a benchmark test.)

Re: Slic3r Settings

Why do you have a z offset under Printer settings?

Re: Slic3r Settings

Hello all, I created a little python script and config that will automatically convert Cura and slic3r gcode to 3w files that can be dropped into xyzware. Is the z offset set in Slic3r or should that be edited in the gcode after slicing?

Anyone willing to try this out and let me know if it works for you too?
The project is at github.com and it can be found here:

Why do you have such a large z offset? How did you come up with that number, as the other user's settings don't have it. I can't get a good print still and want to understand this.

Re: Slic3r Settings

So I've been playing with settings for about 3 weeks now, here's what I've settled on, I'm getting great quality test prints right now

first, I leveled the bed using the manual calibration, and a piece of .004 inch steel as a guage, but a piece of paper should work to.

Layers and Perimeters:
     Layer Height: .3
     first layer: .3
     Perimeters: 1
solid layers: top 3 bottom 3
     extra perimeters if needed
     detect thin walls
     detect bridging perimeters
     seam position: aligned
external perimeters first    <--- checking this made a big difference for me

Infill:
     Fill density: 20%
     Fill Pattern: honeycomb
     Combine infill every: 1

Skirt and brim:
     loops: 1
     distance: 10 mm
     Skirt height: 1
     Brim width: 0.5 mm

Speed:
     Perimeters: 35 mm/s
     Small perimeters: 20 mm/s
     External perimeters: 50%
     Infill: 50mm/s
     Solid infill: 50 mm/s
     Top solid infill: 40 mm/s
     Support Material: 40 mm/s
     Bridges: 30 mm/s
     Gap Fill: 25 mm/s
     Travel: 60 mm/s
     First layer speed: 30%
     Max print speed: 80 mm/s

Filament settings - for xyz printing ABS cartridge
Filament:
     Diameter: 1.75
     Extrusion multiplier: 1.05
     Extruder: 200 - fist layer 200
     Bed: 85 - first layer 85

Printer Settings:

Custom G-Code
     Start g-code:
          G28 ; home all axes
          M109 S[first_layer_temperature] ;heat extruder
G1 E10; extrude 10 mm prior to cleaning.
          M100 ;clean extruder
          G28; home all axis

     Stop G-Code:
          G28 X; home X axis
          G28 Y; home Y axis
          M100; clean extruder
          M104 S0 ; turn off temperature
          G1 Z200
          M84     ; disable motors

Extruder:
     Nozzle Diameter: .4

Re: Slic3r Settings

conundrum2k, what Z offset are you running with those settings?
