Topic: Updated Pics! - RepRapDiscount "Bulldog" Allmetal Extruder Project

Hey, I'm sure lots of us tinkerers got the email from RRD this morning, but figured I'd share it more widely.

RRD have launched a new IndieGoGo campaign to 'test the waters' on demand for a new All-Metal Extruder Assembly - i.e, all the bits not counting the Hotend itself (think Mk IV/V 'lawsy' Extruder Assemblies)

It looks quite nice, being stacked slightly differently to how the stock SD or most other common extruder setups are.  Its designed to capture all 'groove mount' style hotends (aka, J-Heads, Magmas, Merlins, Prusas) and has mount pics of nearly all of them except the E3D.. which I'm 99% confident will work as well having reviewed the tolerances closely.  Its also demo'ed and 'designed' more with the increasing popularity of 'perpendicular' mounted steppers.. meaning the configuration demo'ed in the video is actually on an Ord Bot (pretty sure its the same as mine, a Hadron) where you tend to usually mount the assembly 'sideways' to what we would traditionally see on a Solidoodle however it should work fine in the SD Orientation given its a tad shorter than the front-to-back size of the 'stock' extruder assembly and it also features boltholes in the place that Lawsys hotend would have them.. meaning I'm sure it could be fashioned to fit no issues. But people here often have more than one printer don't we wink

http://www.soliforum.com/misc.php?action=pun_attachment&item=4015&download=0

I've jumped in and grabbed a 'Lite' and an 'XL' version, for initial testing and curiosity. The XL Comes with a 5:1 Geared NEMA. The plan is to ship immediately on the campaign finishing, as they are all built and ready now, its more a market experiment. So if you don't want to get one *now*, they will probably be available in commercial quantities via OEM (where a lot of RRD stuff ends up wink ) and via the RRD Store and Ebay shops in mid-January/Feb 2014...

If you more info, the campaign is over at http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/bulld … t/x/590704 . I personally went with the Lite as I have more hotends than I should really have already, so the options of Prusa's, Magmas or Merlins didn't impress me...

Declaration: I have no affiliation, I've just bought crap loads from RRD in the past and always been happy so figure this will be a winner too. But I provide this information with no more prior knowledge about the effectiveness of the assembly than anyone else, and it'll be late December before I can comment further on the veracity of their claims smile

Re: Updated Pics! - RepRapDiscount "Bulldog" Allmetal Extruder Project

Ok, I've been chatting to RRD, and I've discovered there is a slight issue with the E3D nozzle at the moment

Seems the E3D is not precisely groovemount. Given how the holder plate is currently designed to integrate, there needs to be some Fabrihacktion to get it to work. RRD are very keen though to get it to work with the E3D natively, but the current batch addresses the 'standard' that works for all 5 other major hotends, just not the slightly-different-but-enough-to-matter E3D..

I will keep you posted, but they are keen to see a factory solution, but it wont likely make any of the indiegogo campaign. Doesn't deter myself, I believe I can 'solve it' once I have it in my hands, but I have a truck load of j-heads otherwise anyway... maybe I'll get a Merlin or Magma too for fun *shrug* smile

EDIT: Issue resolved, see newer pics below in thread + new STL Holder

@adrian

which extruder are you using at the moment?

Re: Updated Pics! - RepRapDiscount "Bulldog" Allmetal Extruder Project

Why not a shim that you tap into place to fill that gap on the E3D?

Also this design seems like it is kind of a pain to clean if you have a jam.

The jams on an E3D are fixed usually by just taking the nozzle off. If it were the OEM SD hotend then I am sure it would be a PITA. I am a little curious how the mounting will work out with the SD. I guess I will find out.

SD3 w/ mods:
Glass bed with QU-BD heat pad upgrade, threadless ballscrew w/ 8mm smooth rod, spectra line belt replacement, lawsy MK5 extruder, Lawsy replacement carriage, E3D hotend, Ramps 1.4 w/ reprap discount controller, DRV8825 drivers, 12v 30A PS, Acrylic case, Overkill Y-idlers, Filament alarm, Extruder fan + more.

Re: Updated Pics! - RepRapDiscount "Bulldog" Allmetal Extruder Project

I meant clearing a jam like the resulting filament dust on the teeth of the drive wheel.

Howdy there RRD! smile

At the moment, I'm using on the Solidoodle this style of Extruder combined with the E3D hotend (a lot of the time)
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:111213/

On the OrdBot Hadron, I'm using a home-made-hackup... its a cross between the 'minimalistic extruder' and the J-Head holder thats popular over on Barts forum - again so I can use the E3D. http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:59855 with bits added and removed to make it work.

you have to remove the aluminum plate on the side, but i see that this plate also can be modified to not be removed any more, by grinding 2 small sides, i will show monday pictures what i mean

i took a closer look at the e3d nozzle, you can make it fit into the extruder i think, please give it a try. since the e3d holder is not precise machined, you have to use something like a washer to fix it inside

meanwhile i will redraw the fan holder to suit this nozzle and will upload here, you can print it, remove the fan from the holder comes with my extruder and use the new holder instead.

Ohhh shiny!
So if I were looking to throw the stock SD extruder at the wall, which of these would be a good replacement?

This is a crowd funding thing that I'm running: http://www.gofundme.com/bvi140 It's for pretty selfish reasons tongue

The lite version would be the most direct replacement

Re: Updated Pics! - RepRapDiscount "Bulldog" Allmetal Extruder Project

Do you mean extruder or hotend?

The forum seems to like the E3D hot ends.

Re: Updated Pics! - RepRapDiscount "Bulldog" Allmetal Extruder Project

I managed to tweak the E3D inside the Bulldog extruder but i cannot post pictures because i cannot post links, please check buildlog.net and seach reprapdiscount

Meanwhile i will also email the pictures to adrian, maybe he can post them.

New Pics of the Final version out just fresh from RRD!

At their request to avoid confusion, I've removed the pre-release images and have added these in their place. Avoids confusion etc. Plus they are just better pics anyway wink Theres a few tiny changes - mainly to do with the front plate seating and cleaning access to the main drive cog.

First up; "Meet the Family" - LITE on the Left (1.75mm ONLY, Non-Geared) ; XL on the Right (1.75 & 3mm, 5.18:1 Geared)

Re: Updated Pics! - RepRapDiscount "Bulldog" Allmetal Extruder Project

Hey 2n2r5,

Have you had the chance to mount it and has it removed more moire then the 0.9 degree stepper with the DRV8825?

Powder coated steel enclosure, 1/4" Surface grounded hardened aluminum plate, MK2A Heat bed, .200 Polished fused quartz plate, Machined quick change hot bed mount, E3D hot end, Ramps 1.4, DRV8825 stepper motor drivers

Re: Updated Pics! - RepRapDiscount "Bulldog" Allmetal Extruder Project

Here is a test print. I had to hold the vase up to the light so that you could see any moire. This is without the DRV8825. I will be putting it back on tonight probably. Good results and I am just at 500 steps/mm.  I also attached a picture of my new coupler. Someone made it for me and I am not sure whether they want to be named. If someone is interested, I can probably put you in contact with him. I like the coupler because it doesn't use screws on the 8mm side and has zero backlash since it is a solid design.

Re: Updated Pics! - RepRapDiscount "Bulldog" Allmetal Extruder Project

That coupler only will only work with the threadless ball screw as the variations in the rod will cause it to bind.

I look forward to seeing the difference the 1/32 micro stepping makes
