I was just in Austin last week hanging out with the folks at the ATX Hackerspace.  You should check it out: atxhackerspace.org.  It's just north of Braker on Dessau.

They just got a huge laser cutter and Danny's building a GIANT CNC machine.

They have an open house every Tuesday from 8-11.  Tell 'em Mandy sent you.

Where should supplier reviews go?  Here, or their own thread?

Well, alright then.

Vendor Review
Revolve3D.com

TL;DR: Great guys, good prices, will continue to buy from them.

I took advantage of Revolve3D's promotional "free shipping" deal, and picked up a 10lb box of MG94 for $38 shipped.  From what I understand, Revolve3D carried on where OSPrinting left off, so the stock is the same glorious, creamy MG94 we know and love.

The filament arrived, well sealed, in a somewhat overstuffed USPS Priority Mail box.  I'm fine with this, USPS is gentle with my stuff and the plastic inside was well protected.

Cracking open the box gave me these four bags, and a packing slip.  My assumption is the larger bags are a consistent size and topped off with the smaller ones to make weight.  The large bags are an ounce short of 4 pounds, and the small bags are 1.25 pounds.  The per-bag measurement doesn't really matter, it's just something I noticed.

Here's my packing slip.  Let's see if they short-changed me.  It didn't happen with OSPrinting, doesn't happen with Ultimachine, and cannot happen here.

I ORDERED 10 POUNDS YOU JERKS.  NOW I HAVE TO THROW AWAY THESE 3 EXTRA OUNCES.

The resin is what we expect.

I see you hiding in there you little asshole.  I'm glad they include dessicant, because the plastic really does need to stay dry, but I always end up losing a packet as I pour it into my hopper, and only find out a day later when it's all clogged up.  Maybe I'll use one of my fancy new-fangled plastic crapping robots to print a large sieve for my funnel.

As for the people, I've had great experiences talking with them.  I've only communicated via email (and, really, wish I could everywhere) -- and Trevor has been very responsive even at weird hours and on normal "days off".  I believe the prices are very fair for resin, especially considering how hard it's becoming to get MG94, and the service has been nothing short of exactly what I would expect as an over-entitled neckbearded internet shopper.

Re: Polymer Suppliers

Hilarious review, love it. When the page first loaded all I saw was "Vendor Review" and "you jerks". I was pleasantly surprised at how it ended up.

Adding Revolve3D to the first post now.

Re: Polymer Suppliers

I received my ABS from my3dprint media in Perth, Australia. Their site didn't work for awhile, I contacted the NZ 3dprint media, and found out that the australia one was open again. The person in Perth was a nice guy, but he forgot to send some stuff which I'll ask for soon! He has high and low flor ABS with plenty of colorants! So far, so good (Y)

Re: Polymer Suppliers

I'm still really skeptical on them. They dropped off the face of the earth and left some customers hanging, and never responded to my emails or Facebook messages. Buyer beware unless we hear an explanation.

Re: Polymer Suppliers

I get my MG94 and 4043D pellets from Open Source 3D Printing OS3DP (formerly Open Source Printing OSP).  When I placed my order I was able to log-in with my old username from the OSP site.  From what I understand OS3DP bought the OSP website and Colorant.  I received my package in one day from when I ordered it, real quick shipping.  I would highly recommend them.

36

Re: Polymer Suppliers

Just to clarify, Revolve3D, 3DSupplySource, and OS3DP all stepped in when Rob closed the original OSP.  We all bought out Rob's stock of colorant, however Trevor (Revolve3D) and myself have started offering new colorant and plastics other than MG94 and 4043D.

I've had a few conversations with Trevor myself, and even though we're competitors, I'd happily recommend him for any products I'm out of or don't carry.  I started out in another niche hobby/small commercial industry as one of three suppliers, now there are hundreds, along with Asia-direct.  After living in that world for 5 years, I personally know my top competitors - we hang out at trade shows and visit each other on vacation.  When you're good at what you do, there's plenty of success to share with others; especially when you all have a common goal to further an industry.

Besides, Trevor is also a biologist (as am I), and biologists are awesome!

There was a free colorant included when you buy a box, i wonder if i just need to split this colorant in 9 parts and 1 part per 2lb ?

Re: Polymer Suppliers

L-Cheapo is only capable to cut paper and etch wood correct ?
almost $200 for engraving your name on wood and leather. Interestingly high priced.

40

Re: Polymer Suppliers

No, it cuts through wood and plexi, but clear plexi is harder to do than colored.  Watch the videos and read the updates on indiegogo.  Or maybe even look at the information clearly posted on the product page, the igg page, the robots everywhere page, the wiki, or found with a Google search.

Re: Polymer Suppliers

All i heard that guy said was cut thru paper and edge wood and leather.
THEN he listed things it can cut.
Should have said it in the first place.

3/16" is less then 1/4 of an inch. Interesting.

Still for $200 doesn't seem like enough power... I wonder if its upgradable and if the have more powerful version of it.

No such thing from what i know. When they say "clear" they mean "natural" which means "not colored"
Look for Polycarbonate

Re: Polymer Suppliers

Well tony, there appears to be such a thing in my box of filament at home. tongue Well, it's either ABS or it works just like it from a printing perspective (temps, swell, etc.). Clear means clear unless your seller is find many challenge the English.

I've used mine for making replacement puddle-light covers for my car doors (the old one had a plastic clip crack and got chewed up in a couple of inopportune door-closes). It's not crystal-clear (not nearly as clear as the taulman t-glase, for example) but it does let a bunch of light through. Looks great a couple of layers thick with LEDs shining through.

To quote Have Blue on the subject:

You can indeed have clear ABS - you just have to reduce the size of the butadiene phase distributed through the SAN matrix so that light isn't scattered by it. Unfortunately, reducing the size of the butadiene regions also destroys the impact resistance that the butadiene provides.

As such, 'clear ABS' is actually MABS - methyl methacrylate butadiene styrene. The methyl methacrylate's index of refraction is closer to that of the butadiene than SAN, so the material looks clear.
