I wanted this to work well, but you definitely need to glue the ends on at the very least. Not sure what glue would work best, but there's significant outward pressure as you wind the filament on.

Re: Reviews of Printable Spools

Hole punch a couple holes in the TP tube and modify the endcap to have snaps that go through the holes?
That plus glue?

That'd probably work great. I already have 4-5 spools, so I just rotate through those.

... and I don't have a filastruder.  I'm waiting for the market to be flooded and then I'll steal one at half price on ebay.  haha

The hub is too narrow and makes the filament bend too much.  Otherwise not bad

Used more material than necessary, can be popped apart into two separate pieces

Re: Reviews of Printable Spools

I have some SainSmart ABS that is great filament but comes on chintzy cardboard spools, and I was thinking it might be nice to print a spool or three to put them on, but I wonder if there's a better way to transfer the filament from one to the other than just sitting there spinning and spinning (and dealing with tangles the whole time), which makes it seem less worth it.  But I imagine most people who are printing these are using filastruders and something like IanJohnson's winder?

(I also have a couple of spools of ABS that Solidoodle sold me that are useless, so unless someone figures out a way to save them, I could just pull it off and use those spindles, but that's all that work doubled!)

Re: Reviews of Printable Spools

I have five Filastruders, I just use a drill to wind the spools. Easy peasy.

Useless why?

Cool, some ideas are:

  • printable in one piece without support (very rounded edges)

  • light

  • strong

  • fast to print

  • capable of holding at least 500 grams

  • doesn't bend filament too much

Re: Reviews of Printable Spools

There is a spool customizer on Thingiverse.  thingiverse.com/apps/customizer/run?thing_id=45101

It's a good start, but I think more could be done.  I would like to be able to set the outer diameter of the hub, and define a separate inner diameter to suit PVC, bearings with threaded rod, etc.

Small, has narrow hub that could make filament bend too much.  Sides are short.  Cardboard toilet paper tubes are not exactly the same size, so the object would need to be customized to fit the cardboard tube you have.  Matching plastic tube available, http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:112916

Re: Reviews of Printable Spools

Ha thats funny.  The whole point of using the tp tube was to cut down on the printing time then you go and print a tp tube defeats the purpose.  If  you're going to print the whole thing then I'd start the design over with that in mind.

Re: Reviews of Printable Spools

Here's another printable spool. The main feature of this spool is that it prints as a single piece.

Very nice.  How did create the makerbot customizer form?

Re: Reviews of Printable Spools

you just tag the thingy as customizable, and the button will show up

Here is their documention on how to do it. I don't know why they don't put it on the thingiverse website.

Re: Reviews of Printable Spools

Thanks, your design is what I was working towards.

The hub could probably be made using less material using thin pillars.

Re: Reviews of Printable Spools

Yea, my design is a little wasteful with the plastic. Probably a good bit of plastic could also be removed from the spindle tube.

First example on Thingiverse of a single piece printable spool outside my research in the other thread.   The ABS didn't warp which is probably due to the holes.  Removable support material was not required.  This spool is highly customizable on Thingiverse.  It has holes for starting/ending the filament strand.  The weight seems to increase a bit with single piece spools, probably around 50% for this one.  There's room for more weight reduction by putting more holes into the spool hub and other solid spots.  Very good work.

Here is a down and dirty calculator for this spool if you want to echo back how much filament your spool will hold. This should be accurate enough for government work. :-)

volumeall = width- cone_height ;
volumeCylinder = ((pow(outside_diameter/2,2)*pi*volumeall))/1000 - (pow (spindle_diameter/2,2) *pi *volumeall) /1000;

echo("<b>Max</b> Filament Volume is ", round(volumeCylinder)," CM³");
echo("Estimated Filament Weight is ",round(volumeCylinder*1.04)/1000, " Kg");
