Topic: Boss Nut / PEM Nut Removal (The Easy Way) (Level 1 - Novice Consumer)

Disclaimer:
I labeled this Level 1 because of the ease of the removal process. However, other mods based on this procedure will have higher ratings including removing the bed to do this mod. Please make sure that you print all parts (and extras) necessary to complete your upgrade before performing this step. This WILL keep you from printing until you have finished your mod. With that said, happy modding smile

To start with, print off the pem_nut_removal.stl attached to this post. Use a high infill as it will need to withstand ~90 PSI. I used 100% but I am sure 50-70% could work fine.

Other items you will need:

  • 1/2" Wrench

  • 5/16" Bolt around 1" long no shorter than 3/4"

  • 5/16" flat washer

  • Aluminum Bed with 5/16" "PEM Nut" / Boss Nut

Step 1: Place PEM Nut Removal tool over PEM nut from the bottom side of the bed. This will be a snug fit. That's okay if it doesn't go all the way down. The next couple steps will do that for you.

Step 2: Insert a 5/16" bolt with flat washer through the PEM Nut Removal tool and thread the bolt into the PEM nut.

Step 3: Tighten the 5/16" Bolt until the removal tool is snug on the removal tool and the removal tool is flat to the aluminum around the pem nut.

Step 4: Continue tightening the 5/16" bolt until the Pem Nut is extracted. It should be fairly easy to remove with a 6 inch wrench. You will need to hold the bed during the process but no other tools should be required to hold the bed while you are removing the nut.

Step 5: Admire how cleanly the nut was removed from the bed without causing damage to the nut or bed.

Step 6: Grab another beer and move on to the next step of your Mod!

Hi 2n2r5,
excellent guide!

Now we would need a guide on how to remove the threaded rod from the stepper motor...

Here I found some pics from our great Lawsy, but no details on the hexagon tube he used

http://www.soliforum.com/topic/2304/eli … it/page/2/

If I understood well we need a metal tube with less diameter than a 5/16" nut, and then screw down the nut on top of the tube until the threaded rod pops out from the stepper motor. Is it right?

Thanks for the advice!
Nick

A vicegrips pliers works well to remove pems too.   Just rotate it back and forth and pull it out. They come out fairly easily.

Check again, those are my pictures tongue  And like Adrian already posted, he put up a guide for removing the 5/16" rod already.

You can just use  a bunch of 5/16" nuts like in Adrian's post. I just happen to have a random tool laying around. I'm not too sure what it went to. I may have gotten it to remove something on my lawn tractor.

Sorry guys, too much Soliforum reading made me miss Adrian's guide!

And yes, they were 2n2r5 pictrures indeed!

I guess your guides deserves to get sticky, or maybe we need a "guides index" thread so instead of being scattered in several pages they are all in one neat place smile
