Oh, does the end of the rod touch the end of the motor shaft inside the coupler? the squeaking could be from the two pivoting against each other.

It does. I read that's the correct way to install it. It prevents any vertical flex in the coupler.

Re: Fixing banding (z-wobble) with fine threaded z-rod

I bet the squeak is from lateral motion inside the coupler, then. The rod is scraping along the top of the motor shaft. You could separate them and polish the end of the rod so it rides smoothly, but it might not be worth the effort to you.

Printed the same test print at 0.2mm layer height. I think I might need to do a z-offset calibration, but other than that I'm happy with the results.

Just received my order from McMaster-Carr today. I was surprised to find the pieces that I needed were so cheap on there. Most things I've looked at in the past on their site were way overpriced. Anyway, here's what I got:

Type 18-8 Stainless Steel Fully Threaded Rod, M5 Thread, 0.8mm Pitch, 300mm Long - $5.12
http://www.mcmaster.com/#90024a224/=x1tlvz

Steel Thread-Locking Slotted Insert for Metal Thin Wall, M5 Interior Thread, 5/16"-18 Exterior Thread, 5/16" Long - $6.75 for 5-pack
http://www.mcmaster.com/#90259a218/=x1tk60

The threaded rod was packed well and is straight as an arrow. I'm glad I didn't gamble on an ebay one. Can't wait to get it installed. Just waiting on the motor coupler now. Should be here tomorrow.

And I have 4 extras of the M5 thread adapters, so if anyone wants to convert to an M5 rod and doesn't want to buy a 5-pack of these, I can probably help you out.

So if I'm going to do this I'd still need to purchase an adapter for the stepper motor to the new rod right?

Right. This is the coupler that I ordered, but there are other options available. You can go with a flexible coupling or a stiff one. You could print one off thingiverse. I think someone else even mentioned using some kind of tubing.

Thanks for the quick response! I may do this in a week or two...hammering out some other issues right now, just waiting for parts, hopefully I can get it up and running tomorrow in time to print some things for mother's day gift(s).

Re: Fixing banding (z-wobble) with fine threaded z-rod

I just want to say thank you all for the wealth of information, I should have done the Z rod first as mine was basically waving at you when moving the bed.  I have the lawsy carriages, bearings along with rods that need to be cut which I plan to do next.  I wanted to get the GT belts/pulleys replaced as well but can't seem to find a place that sells everything (or as close to everything in one kit), I'm from the US. I tried to get a focus on the banding but finally gave up, anyhow, here's the pic.

Re: Fixing banding (z-wobble) with fine threaded z-rod

I'll jump on the bandwagon. I ordered from Amazon two parts and designed and printed the 3mm nut hugger. My tolerances were a bit tight on the nut hugger so I heated the nut with a lighter and pressed it in. Actually designed my part to hold two 3mm nuts. The second slid right in place and super glued to secure.
