I noticed that OS Printing recommend a mix ratio of between 75:1 and 50:1
Have you tried these sorts of ratios?
Your ratio seems to be much higher.

Im interested in your thoughts.
PS the filament looks great.

With regards to the mix ratios. The ratios are depended on a few things. The recommended (from the vendor) mix ratio to achieve a specific color and how well the extruder can mix plastic. The numbers we provide are safe number that will ensure the properties of the plastic won't change. DePartedPrinter is testing plastic for us to see what ratios work best for achieving proper coloring of the filament while making sure this filament will print properly too. Once DePartedPrinter has conducted his testing, our ratios will be updated.

Another note, our ABS colorant has two different sources. The red, blue, and yellow are custom color order. We know the properties and mix ratios of the colorant. The surplus colorant is from a company that went out of business years ago. We don't have the same level of knowledge that we do with the new colorant.  Typically, ABS has ratios ranging from 2% to 4%.
In conclusion, use our numbers as a safe starting point and look to testers like DePartedPrinter to see what ratios achieve good results.

Interesting comments OSPrinting, a reply to my email I sent you would be appreciated wink

Re: Colorants (masterbatch)

32:1 is my starting point. I will definitely explore other ratios and see what results we get.

Based on my tests, I think the surplus colorant (green, black, grey) from OS was very concentrated and can be used in higher ratios just fine.

Re: Colorants (masterbatch)

the transition was short/orange which makes me feel really good about what we will be able to do.

20 feet to change colours is no big loss IMHO.

Re: Colorants (masterbatch)

Few quick questions, first:
How do you do your ratio? Just by eying it? Or something else?
Second, how much filament will each bag make? Please let me know in feet, and I know that that varies based on the ratio, but lets say on a 32:1 ratio. Thanks!

Re: Colorants (masterbatch)

Real quickly, does anyone know how PLA is going?

Measure it! Measuring cup (for the plastic) and teaspoons (for the colorant).

Each bag of what? Colorant? 2oz * 32 = 64oz, which is 4lbs of filament. The length depends on the diameter - you can calculate it with the density of ABS.

No real progress with PLA. It's definitely doable with a puller, but I haven't done much with it as I prefer ABS.

Still needs a little bit of tweaking but it's close.

I am impressed with what can be done so far. I think the colors on the chart I put up earlier will be doable once the ratios are figured out. Blue is on its way.

Blue @ 32:1

A lighter blue could easily be made by increasing the ratio.

Re: Colorants (masterbatch)

Hey DepartedPrinter, something does not jive with your ratios:

was very concentrated and can be used in higher ratios just fine.

A lighter blue could easily be made by increasing the ratio.

First if a color is very concentrated than wouldn't one be able to use less not a "higher ratio"?

and then wouldn't one make a lighter blue by reducing the ratio?

Now I have never made a extrusion or mixed any colors so maybe it is my ignorance but your your description seems strange.

I really appreciate all that you have done and really appreciate this thread but I am confused.

Re: Colorants (masterbatch)

Actually, (I think) he means a higher ratio of the base both times, at least that is what makes sense to me. A more concentrated color could use less color/more base. A lighter blue, i.e. less color would need a higher ratio of base. Yes, most people would most likely say a lower ratio, but he is consistent. He says 32/1 which is 32 base to one color. Higher ratio (40/1) => more base less color.

49

Re: Colorants (masterbatch)

Nimikin is right - higher ratio means more base, less colorant - 100:1 is higher than 32:1.

Re: Colorants (masterbatch)

I can start putting up percentages if that would help people. I want to make sure these can be easily recreated on anyone's machine.

Purple is hopefully coming next...

* once I get the purple done I will update the first post with directions for making all six colors.
