Topic: (S4) "active extruder 0" with no power on the board pins

Greetings,
Back again with a new problem! After running about a 3hour print. at around 2hours in, the extruder suddenly shuts off and goes cold. My positive connector from my hotend was crazy hot, so I wiggled the negative connector and my extruder started to heat up again. But I shut it off after to look deeper into my connections.

I rewired to make sure I got good connection, and turned it on, but now my RH program is giving me the "active extruder 0" error. I tested my continuity of my wires going from the board to the hotend and it all checked out ok. Except for one thing. Are the two wires coming off the plug suppose to be connected? As in, I unplug from the board and touch one probe to one pin on the plug and touch the other probe to both wires that plug into my hotend and I get a beep. which means the wires are touching or connected to each other somewhere, unless its suppose to be.

But the main concern is that I set my multimeter to 12v and probe the pins on my board with it on and connected and get no reading, even when I activate extruder in RH.

I looked up a troubleshooting but it only explains what to do if you get a reading on the board.

As far as I know everything else works. in RH program my bed heats up, I cant move my bed or extruder because I get a cold extruder error.

You're focus needs to be on the thermistor, not the heater itself.  No power will go to the heater pins if the thermistor wires are shorted or open.

Try changing USB cables and maybe a different USB port. I get this error randomly and it is on the computer end.
What wires are you talking about in specific? Do you have a picture of your current configuration?

PSU issue- which power supply are you using? If using stock Solidoodle, those things fail eventually and they barely meet the power requirements of the printer. I would recommend upgrading to a Supernight PSU. With this, you have a trimpot which can control voltage. Since all boards have a different demand, you can see improved heatup times and more consistent performance. I may appear as a salesman right now, but we carry it because we (Printit) are all personal fans.

I just checked my thermistor wire from plug on the board to termistor wires and theres no break. If I turn on my board and probe the thermistor pins on the board, should I get a reading?

I will try a different usb cable and port now and report back. But yes, Im using the stock PSU. If my board isnt fried then Ill for sure pick that up, well ill pick it up anyways but might be after i get a new board (worst case)

Tired a different (working) usb cable and differnt port but still nothing

Re: (S4) "active extruder 0" with no power on the board pins

you can check the resistance of the thermistor at the plug removed from the board and report back.

Actually I removed the thermistor and with the slightest touch one of the leads broke off. So maybe thats the problem or maybe I just broke it. haha
You guys wouldnt happen to sell thermistors would you? haha

Re: (S4) "active extruder 0" with no power on the board pins

Ok so I was able to find a new thermistor, a Semitec Thermistor 104GT-2.
I hooked it up to my preexisting wiring, but something strange happens.
when I turn my printer on and test the volts off the harness that attaches to my board, I get about 5v
But as soon as I plug in my thermistor harness to that harness, I suddenly get 0v reading. I tested my continuity from bard to thermistor and no breaks in my wire.
I unplug the thermistor again and test my harness that goes to my board and I get 5v again. So when I plug it in, for some reason it doesnt get a reading.

Maybe this is a common electronic tech thing, but Im very not experienced in electronic tech haha

[edit]
I also tried to enter the "#define EXT0_TEMPSENSOR_TYPE 8" into my Gcode but still not getting anything.

Ok so I think Im not suppose to type that into my Gcode but have to update the firmware again like when I first upgraded to my lite6? So I should just follow AZERATE's E3D update for printboard instructions again?

So I tried a few things and I get this weird M105 code that keeps going on and on and I looked it up but couldnt find info on what it is.

Re: (S4) "active extruder 0" with no power on the board pins

M105 is the firmware requesting the extruder temp - that is perfectly normal behavior.

Oh ok. But with all this I still get no temp for my extruder as well as the temp of the room with my extruder off. and my extruder cant be turned on. Im a suppose to re-insall my firmware when I installed my replacement thermistor?

I also get 5v reading on my multimeter but as soon as I plug in my thermistor, it read 0v. When I unplug it, it reads 5v again. Is that normal?

Re: (S4) "active extruder 0" with no power on the board pins

Thanks to AZERATE, the problem is fixed! He told me to make sure that the fiberglass sleeves on the thermistor's leads are covering it completely. Turns out I was getting a short from one of my leads touching my block.
