Topic: Warhammer 40K- Spacemarines prints

One of the thing's I've always been fascinated with has been the Warhammer 40K universe, and have enjoyed painting some of the Warhammer models.

Unfortunately, printing some of these models on a FDM printer is less than ideal, as the resolution is not there, especially if you want to print the models to gaming scale.

So when I got my Form 1+ printer, Warhammer prints became a real possibility.  The Games Workshop models are extremely detailed, but because of their size, they are nearly impossible to scan using current, affordable scanners.  Even my Einscan scanner cannot scan these little things in high detail.

So where can one find good, detailed models?  THere are some beautiful models available on Pinterest or DeviantArt, but most of them are not available for download or purchase. The models that ARE available on various sites are very simplistic, and lack any detail.

Then I remembered that there are programs that let you extract the 3D models from games.  So armed with a couple of them, I was able to extract some models, along with their textures as well as the "bones".  The bones are the skeleton inside the model, and when imported into 3D Studio Max, you can pose the models as you like

So here are a few Ultramarines, as well as a an UltraMarine Dreadnought.  One of them was printed using grey resin, the rest were done in clear resin, as I had ran out of grey, and until I get the bottle of Black I ordered, the clear is the only thing I have.  It actually looks very cool if you hold it up to a light.

I think I'll leave these exactly as they are, and reprint the whole thing in black once I get the resin.

The marines are ~39mm in height, the dreadnought is 88mm.  These are slightly larger than the Games Workshop models, but they are true to scale.

The problem with the Games Workshop models, is they deliberately made all the marines, scouts, orks and such the same height, for the sake of balancing the game itself, but in terms of scale, they are off.

If you go by the descriptions in the books, a space marine is supposed to be between 7'6" and 8'-0" tall, whereas a normal human is about 5'10 on the average.  So that would make a Space marine model 30% larger than a human soldier.  The dreadnought is supposedly 3 times the height of a human, or a little over 2 times the size of a space marine.

Here is a much larger version of a Dark Angel Leader.  This model is about 4.75" in height, and was painted flat black.

Sooo yesterday the print was not ready when I had to work, but today.

I have not even had your files and therefore download a Space Marine from Thingiverse and reduced to 33%.

Printed I of PLA and a 0.2mm nozzle with which one can make very small things in good quality. So I'm quite happy if one also takes into account the result that the pressure is not elaborated. Unfortunately, there is the further that the character in the original size only a tiny connection between the joints has thereby the figure when removing the support breaks down into its component parts. This is why I have also not cleaned and left that way.

Let's see if I as a more suitable file think, is intended for this size for printing is so I'm quite happy for a first attempt so far to the limits of FDM prints.
In any case, it is an interesting task.
