Topic: Extruder idler replacement

Just wondered if anyone has sourced a replacement for the extruder idler ?
My stock idler no longer works, it just doesn't grip the filament tightly enough anymore.
I've been using a printed one with bearings for the fast few months and it worked great but the ABS is now worn down.
I'm looking for a metal replacement if anyone knows where to get one.

Re: Extruder idler replacement

Ok, I just tried turning the stock idler round the wrong way and strangely, it works ! smile
I guess the toothed recess has become worn but the wider smooth part seems to be forcing the filament against the brass drive gear better and it's gripping the filament just fine.

Edit : Spoke too soon, the filament slipped into the recess halfway through a print and stopped extruding.
So I'm back to using a printed idler for the time being.
The original question applies, anyone know of a replacement metal idler ?

Sent you a PM Mark. wink
Must admit, I like the look of the Bondtech extruder you're using. Maybe a future mod.

Re: Extruder idler replacement

Have another plan, going to try a printed idler using Bronzefill.
That should hopefully be harder wearing.

Re: Extruder idler replacement

You could a smooth idler bearing with a grove in it. The groves in the da Vinci idler aren't really needed.

or you could take a bearing and use a tap on a drill an Tap it sorta like in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijgzBlRF8T8

just don't go to deep and I think it would work.

Re: Extruder idler replacement

I think the groove just helps stop the idler slipping on the filament. That's what happened when I tried turning the stock idler round.
I printed a replacement in pla and it's working great although I'm not sure it'll last much longer than the abs one I was using.
A printed idler with two bearings works surprisingly well but only lasts a few months with plastic.
Like I said, I'm going to print one in Bronzefill today, I have another couple of 8mm bearings I can use with it.
It's a lot harder than regular filament so should last much longer.

Re: Extruder idler replacement

You could use a print as a silicone mold to pour an idler out of lead..   simple fishing sinkers melt easily on the stove.

Re: Extruder idler replacement

lead would deform quickly its quite soft.  But you could do a lost pla cast in aluminum or bronze

Re: Extruder idler replacement

for small parts you could use something like this to melt the metal

Re: Extruder idler replacement

Or for $400 you could buy a new Da Vinci.

Get one of those http://www.ebay.com/itm/3D-Printer-1-75 … SwWTRWzl3t should work without too much modding.

I think the problem there would be the size of the bore. Most idlers and drive gears seem to have a 5mm bore but the Davinci idler shaft is 3mm.

Edit : Just realised what you meant (doh !), replace the stock extruder with that.
I've actually been looking into something similar which uses printed parts. Will post here if I go ahead with it.

Re: Extruder idler replacement

Here's the Bronzefill idler with the 8mm bearings ....

http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/ac28/scobodon/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-03/20160307_204039_zpsxzx7uklj.jpg

It's rock hard and quite a bit heavier than the pla or abs one. I'll run with the pla one till it starts to wear then replace it with this one.

Update :
The bronzefill doesn't seem to be any harder wearing than normal pla, it's showing signs of wear already.
However, I made one with TPU (see post further down) and so far it's performing well.

Re: Extruder idler replacement

Well you could print a spacer to take it from 3mm to 5 mm no? kind of like a straw.

Re: Extruder idler replacement

Yeah I guess you could try something like that, although it would be tricky printing something that small.

Re: Extruder idler replacement

You may need to drill out the inner hole but I think it is doable

Re: Extruder idler replacement

Update :

I had a crazy idea about trying an idler printed with TPU but wasn't sure if it would be too pliable.
So I printed one off and surprisingly it works great !
The bearings fitted much easier since TPU is semi flexible.
It'll be interesting to see how long it lasts compared with PLA and ABS.

Edit :-

The TPU idler works great with pla and abs but not quite so well with flexi.
It seems to be slightly under extruding when printing flexi possibly due to the TPU idler being slightly softer than the pla/abs one.
I've ordered a sample of nylon filament to try that next. The Taulman stuff claims to be far more durable than other filaments.
The other option of course is to replace the stock extruder completely. Some of the ones on Thingiverse look like they could be made to fit the Davinci without too much trouble.

Re: Extruder idler replacement

Ok, I think I've finally found a solution.
I decided to try swapping the whole extruder assembly for one of these ...... http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:973274.
So I printed the left hand version and fitted a 3x10x5mm bearing for the idler.
I had to mod it a bit to get it to fit the Davinci but so far it's working extremely well with every filament type I've tried including flexible. Much better than I expected !
I'm working on tweaking the design to incorporate the E3D mount and the extruder in one part which will give more support to the stepper as it's currently only fixed to the carriage by the bottom 2 screws.
It should also be much easier to fit than the current E3D mod which uses the stock extruder.

Re: Extruder idler replacement

Just finished the E3D mount with combined extruder and it’s working great with all types of filament I’ve tried including flexible. (Ignore the untidy cables, haven't got round to that yet.)
I’ve uploaded the files to Thingiverse if anyone wants to try it …… http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1723817

Maybe way too late for some... but I just started using this and it's seems to be working (my own design based off the original wheel).
