Topic: Automatic in-text links?

I've just noticed automatic in-text links are appearing in new posts... Is this intentional? Seems to be 3d-printing related words at least. If so, would be nice if it searched text by whole words, and linked to something other than the post you're already reading! smile

Personally I'm not a fan of these, much like the 16,000,000 phoney "download" links on torrent sites, I always get suspicious I'm about to be whisked away to a dodgy "you're our 1,000,000th visitor you've won a $16,000/month job totally not pr0n at all please enter your credit card details here so my nigerian uncle can transfer you this inheritance for safe-keeping" site.

Ha I know how you feel, they are intentional as a trial for the next month.

Re: Automatic in-text links?

Could you please take a screenshot of the links you are talking about ?

I am currently working on something that will link commonly searched wiki pages on the forum to help people find info faster.

in the above thread post 2 the term "light  bulb" links to some skimlinks site.
Post 7 "350 watt power" links to amazon
post 8 "Lap top" links to ebay.
Shopping added by skim words.

I am not a fan of an add link in seemingly every post.

Re: Automatic in-text links?

Thanks for the feedback. This is a trial run and once the tests are over Ill see what can be done.

I have also added a new feature where wiki articles will be linked inside posts for certain words, for example, enabling support material will automatically link to the relevant wiki article. I think this will make finding info easier for most members. Whenever you create a new wiki article it will be added to the forum as well.

Re: Automatic in-text links?

My post http://www.soliforum.com/post/91279/#p91279 highlights "abs" (in the word "absolute") and "extruder".
I see what you're up to, if the links are always to the relevant page in the wiki then that's maybe not such a bad idea! smile
Thanks for your continued work keeping this place going, Brad.

Re: Automatic in-text links?

Are you getting the ABS in "absolute" highlighted? I am not in my browser, what browser are you using?

Yeah the purpose of this is to get the wiki going again, and to make it easier for members to find relevant information based on the post they are reading smile

The other links are from an advertising program I am running a trial on to see if its a good fit for the forum. Will let it run for a few more weeks to collect more data.

Re: Automatic in-text links?

I can't speak for grob, but yes that is the perfect example.  For me it was the word replace and the PLA was highlighted.  I use Firefox.

Re: Automatic in-text links?

Yeah there's ads (blue links) and wiki links (dashed underlines).

We know, that is the system adding the dashes (links) in the above post wink
I was referring to the ads.

Re: Automatic in-text links?

The inline wiki links (not to be confused with the hamster wink) are a very good idea. Me like!! I don't know if it defeats the purpose, but can ad links be a different color than normal links? I've seen a lot of sites use this mechanism but the advertising link is typically green and double-underlined. I don't mind this ad system as long as I can distinguish between the two on a phone... On a desktop it's just a matter of hovering.

Re: Automatic in-text links?

Good idea jagowilson! Ill look into that.

Re: Automatic in-text links?

OK, shopping links are now green. Lets try this for a bit.

Re: Automatic in-text links?

Awesome!! Thanks for all your hard work Brad.

Re: Automatic in-text links?

No prob! smile

Now we just need some help writing some more wiki articles for common phrases that would be useful for members to see.

Re: Automatic in-text links?

Just FYI: Apparently adblock+ removes the links (at least the advert ones) and just leaves the text. I don't see any of the ad links in any of the example posts folks have pointed at in this thread.

Re: Automatic in-text links?

Yup adblock probably gets rid of them, and im perfectly fine with people choosing to use adblock.
