Topic: Door Latch

Like many folks I wanted the hole in the door changed. I've seen some nicely done models for a simple handle, but I wanted a latch to keep the door shut. I borrowed the tabs from cmetzel's 1 piece knob. This is a three piece model.

I've installed it and it works but needs a little tweaking.

Let me know what you think.

Re: Door Latch

I was just starting to think about that.  After I put the doorknob on my daughter decided it would be fun to open and close the door 50 times an hour.

It's a good start.   I was going to try to create indentations like a radio dial so I could twist it up and leave it without having to have anything mounted to the case.

Re: Door Latch

A radio dial sounds really fun! One thing I would change on mine is to have the tabs on the inside, but I just wanted a fast solution last night. It's a bit loose but does hold the door closed when the extruder is rapidly going back and forth.

Here are the latest files after tweaking from the first print. I'd like to revisit this a bit but probably won't until I load black filament again.

Re: Door Latch

I like it as the magntic from SD is not sticking very well to the door.

SD2 - Glass Bed, Fans on PCB and Y motor, Custom enclosure
Slicer - Simplify3D

Re: Door Latch

My brain is also concepting without my permission (aka daydreaming) about a completely 3d printed lock system that would work like the clicker on a ball point pen to engage and disengage the ability to rotate.  I may even allow myself the cheat and add a small wire spring, but I think you could print a belleville spring and get it to work, but not sure about the longevity.  Then at least the kids can't open it when I'm not around.  I keep the exacto and schtuff in there.

Re: Door Latch

After my magnet fell off the third or fourth time I gave up on it. I imagine the heat from the printer's interior was enough to render the adhesive meh. I have a roll of .5" Kapton tape which would probably fix that, but then there would still be the issue of the hole in the door, dear Liza, dear Liza...

Definitely possibilities for completely printed solutions, although I don't consider using springs cheating unless you just want the challenge. Take a look at this Revoltech joint and see if that can be modified. Obviously my model is not a 100% sound solution but it's a starting point. The fact that I can concept an idea then hold it the same day makes me squee just a bit. smile

Re: Door Latch

Yeah I love the fact that I can dream it and build it in the same hour.   I like the joint, but I like to "invent" my own stuff first, then see what I reinvented later if that makes any sense.  I enjoy the challenge of reinventing the wheel to see if I can.

Re: Door Latch

I made a few revisions to this based on the first print. This now keeps my door nice and snug helping to keep heat inside the printer. The base is the same but the handle has been enlarged and now features a sweet SD2 emblem and the latch in the back is perfected.

@cmetzel I really like your idea of some sort of button latch but I haven't had a chance to put much thought on it.

Re: Door Latch

Printed out, sanded the square pegs and round part of the handle and works perfectly just dry fit with no glue, even though I cracked one of the tabs to hold it to the door. Excellent handle!

One note, I did have to put all 3 through netfabb to clean them up for printing

10

Re: Door Latch

Glad you like it!

Interesting though, what needed fixing in netfabb? I didn't get any errors when I sliced the models and I checked them before exporting STLs.

11

Re: Door Latch

When I brought them into RH, the polygons were all wonky, especially noticeable on the tabs for holding the latch to the door. It added in vertical diamond shapes

12

Re: Door Latch

OK I see the diamond shapes you're talking about. That's just tripled polygons in the OpenGL preview in RH. There's no actual issue with the models themselves though.

RH doesn't give me the option to load my Slic3r settings so I keep the Slic3r program open and load my STL's in there. If you get an error when loading an STL or after slicing please let me know because that will point to a problem with the model.

13

Re: Door Latch

I printed everything in one pass (all three objects) using Repetier Host and Slic3r without any slicing problems.

14

Re: Door Latch

Love this door latch but I keep forgetting I installed it and keep trying to rip the whole door off.

15

Re: Door Latch

I really like this handle also.

Re: Door Latch

Can someone post a picture of it installed?  I had a similar idea but my heat core died a day before my Christmas vacation started.  I had so much planned but ended up having to spend time with my wife and kids.  wink

Re: Door Latch

Here's what I just printed. I see that I should have rotated the handle so that the "S2" wouldn't have been face down. It got a "shiny" and kind of disfigured appearance because of it. Either way, I very happy with it and it works great. No more having the door swing open by mistake.
Thank you BigHache for the nice work!

Re: Door Latch

I like the concept a lot, but find that I have to push against the handle to get the door to close, at which point the whole thing just implodes into the printer.  Might have been better if it were reversed.  Or maybe some sort of lock to keep the things in place after they are assembled to the door?

Re: Door Latch

I don't have to apply any inward pressure when using mine. It has a real nice and snug fit.

very nice i like your work!

Re: Door Latch

I love it. Gonna try it at home soon.

Re: Door Latch

for some reason the stl preview wasn't working for me so I added this: http://cubes.supercuber.com/ymZDcPqi4oL3CKXDE9BjXN

Re: Door Latch

It does that for several of us and (at random for me)...just right click hit refresh/reload after the window pops up...

Re: Door Latch

Completely redesigned for SD3.
Used 32mm hole (just because I have drill for that).
I also change handle direction to match door handel.
I will post STL and models if some one want it.
I didn't print this yet so modifications are possible...
