Topic: Stainless steel and Magnetic PLA filaments

Proto-Pasta is well known for PLA based exotic filaments. Seems as though the concept of Bronzefill is catching on
http://www.proto-pasta.com/

I'll be picking up some of the stainless steel PLA later this week, though neither material will ship until February.

Printit Mason and Printit Horizon printers

Re: Stainless steel and Magnetic PLA filaments

Very neat.   if I ever get the will/money/time/knowledge to get my own SD2 working again. I'll have to try the magentic stuff smile

Re: Stainless steel and Magnetic PLA filaments

Oh, I gave up that battle after months and my SD2 is collecting dust.  I do have it around in case I really need something and want to spend 4 days tweeking it for a print or two.  I am hoping maybe in 2 years I can get another 3D printer, and by then they should even be better and maybe even dual color will be in my price range.

Re: Stainless steel and Magnetic PLA filaments

Y skips are an issue you should be able to solve by if nothing else buying new hardware. Why not get a new Y motor and drivers? Failing that, a new Mobo? Skips aren't that difficult of a problem because they only have so many causes...

I'm new around here but I saw your bronze fill thread and your prints look good. Don't give up because of an issue you could resolve for under $200.

Re: Stainless steel and Magnetic PLA filaments

Yeah..I have tried buying a couple new things and new has not helped. Though I am not trying to hijack this nice thread on nifty magnetic PLA smile

I am sorry to hear that.  If there is anything we can do to help just ask smile

Re: Stainless steel and Magnetic PLA filaments

Tis fine. I have been painting instead. Both these materials look nifty. I might have to order a small sample just to see how they are and bash my printer into working hehe

gunna put in my order today. wish it shipped before feb

Re: Stainless steel and Magnetic PLA filaments

Oh that is so cool.

If you build it they will come. Then they will make fun of it, tell you it's not worth doing and go home and try to copy you.

Thanks for sharing these, 3D printing is getting more and more exciting and amazing

Will have to give these a try eventually

Re: Stainless steel and Magnetic PLA filaments

Almost shipping time.  Can't wait for mine to get here

Re: Stainless steel and Magnetic PLA filaments

Last I preordered from Proto-Pasta, it took an additional 3 months than originally quoted for some High Temp PLA.
But if it is a wait for consistent filament, I think it is well worth it.

I'm gonna order some next week. I can't wait to experiment with smoothing. I can think of about a dozen applications I could use the SS for on a reqular basis if it works out well.

Re: Stainless steel and Magnetic PLA filaments

Can someone tell me, most of this stuff just melts at regular PLA/ABS temps? I saw the magnetic recommend even lower. Could someone pint with this stuff with SD stock extruders, thermistors and nozzles? I think it's pretty neat. I have a Press on order and I have an SD2 Pro that needs a new motor. I'm eventually upgrade the SD2 to a Bulldog or other setup but I was just wondering how far I'd get with this stuff once I get off of my rear and fix my SD2. Thanks in advance.

Re: Stainless steel and Magnetic PLA filaments

Unfortunately they (Proto Pasta) have not announced recommended heat settings like they usually do in detail.
And yes, you *can* print it with a stock hotend, but just imagine a stainless steel PLA clog in a PEEK hotend. It may just be a certain percentage steel, but I can't imagine it would be any less fun than clearing a PLA clog. Also, consider expansion. It may be wise to upgrade to an E3D with a larger nozzle...it would certainly be easier to maintain. smile

Re: Stainless steel and Magnetic PLA filaments

I've had the pleasure of clearing a PLA clog. Upgrading is something I've always planned on doing. I think all of these different filaments are really interesting. Not just these but, stuff like laywood too. Thanks for the insight. smile

Re: Stainless steel and Magnetic PLA filaments

Can anyone that has used this filament comment on it's strength? For example, I would like to make "metal" gears for stepper/servo motors for small projects. I'm curious to know if prints using this filament are stronger/harder than standard PLA.

Thanks smile

It is no stronger than traditional PLA. Read the FAQ on the wesite  http://www.proto-pasta.com/product#SSstrength
